Try lipsyl or vaseline to begin with - it might just be the cold air. however, if it doesn't clear up it might be infected. Keep an eye on it and reassess in a couple of days.

Blisteze (or Blistex or whatever they call it now) is very good.

Nip · 15/11/2007 11:19

it is from dribble after having a week of teething. I have been putting a little vaseline on it but i didnt know if this was correct.

He's only 19mo so i'm not sure if blisteze would be suitable

sudocreme or similar nappy cream is described as 'healing' on the tub and has antiseptic properties I think.

Raggydoll · 15/11/2007 11:22

its also a barrier like vaseline so will keep any more dribble away from the surface - hth

I had one of these and it turned out to be a fungal infection. Does it look a bit like a coldsore? It is called chelitis - basically if the skin becomes cracked for any reason and then if you constantly lick the cracked area or it is continually moist (as it would be if he is teething) the fungal infection sets in and stops it healing. I put Canesten cream on mine and it worked a treat but might be worth checking with Dr. what is suitable for a young 'un.

nailpolish · 15/11/2007 11:45

i would be careful what yo uput near a baby's mouth like canesten or sudocrem! vaseline is perfectly suitable and safe

mrsmalumbas · 15/11/2007 11:57

np - yes, it may be safe, but if it is fungal like mine was it won't work and might even make it worse by sealing in moisture ... yes Nip please don't put anything on without checking but in my case both Dr and pharmacist overlooked the possibility it might be fungal, it was a lot of googling that led me to this conclusion and once I realised this it healed up in days after having had a sore mouth for weeks.

nailpolish · 15/11/2007 11:58

if it is fungal it should be seen by a dr for a young baby

casbie · 15/11/2007 12:53

DS (4) had a fungal infection and has some medicine for it, apparently some sort of infection all the way across his face and doc gave him anti-biotics.

apperntly, they get it from kissing. i asked him if he had been kissing girls at school (jokingly) and he said 'nooooo' and went brght red.

cleared up with in a week!

bless!

I had one of these and tried vaseline, anti-septic creams etc and finally went to GP who gave me anti-biotic cream, still no improvement, then anti-biotic tablets-they didn't work. I went to another GP who gave me Betnovate and it was gone within 24 hours.
