pap smear result - 3A - worried!

Hi,

I've just been told by the doctor's assitant that my pap result came back at grade 3A (or a?). I'm supposed to speak to the doctor in 2 hours (when he's in) and he will explain to me everything. But for now, I'm scaring myself senseless! Googling of course didn't help me and I was wondering if you would know or have experienced this. Am I going to die? (sorry for being so malodramatic, but at the moment I'm so worried...).
Thanks for any information.

Sorry...I don't have much knowledge of this.

Hopefully you'll get to speak to the Doc soon.

I'll bump this for you, in the hope that someone can give you some reassurance.

hope you get the info you need soon

deb, i dont know what 3A on a smear (or pap) means. I guess you will have to be reassesed. It could just be as simple as having a second smear or it may mean you have to go for a colposcopy (giant binoculars to have a closer look). I was CINIII with a very small margin of cancerous cells (they can only tell CIN status at colp so this does NOT refer to your result in anyway)so was on the way to being in trouble. However, i was treated at the time, very simple, if not a little uncomfortable treatment, a six month follow up, followed by yearly smears for 5 years. All is now ok and im back to three yearly smears. Surprisingly i wasnt even worried as i knew lots of women who had been in a similar situation. Hope that gives you some perspective, but you will feel better when you have spoken to the doc. Keep away from bloody google!

Don't you have some cupboards that need organising or something physical to do that can keep you occupied til the doc rings you.

mazmack · 14/11/2007 15:45

as far as I know pap 3a result is the very mildest classification of abnormal cells...

mazmack · 14/11/2007 15:50

..which i believe they would just keep an eye on with a repeat smear in 6 months, or remove

debliz5 · 14/11/2007 16:19

Thanks for all your answers. Just called the doc and I was told he would call me back in 15 minutes... I had the test done 6 months ago and I was class 2, which is the mild abnormality. The test now came higher. That's why I'm worried. that it (whatever "it"is) has progressed. I'm doubly worried because we were just starting to try for our 3rd child, and now I think it's going to delay it for a while (and I'm 36 - so not THAT much time - and also thinking of maybe a 4th??).

what did the doctor say?? I guess they will send you for a colposcopy, but i had all of that rigmarole, you definately wont be as "advanced" as i was, i was sent straight in with severe abnormalities. Try not to worry, the treatment is uncomfortable, assuming you need any, it might put your TTC plans back six months or so, but no more i wouldnt have thought. FWIW, these abnormalities are in cells that, if left, may become cancerous, in five or ten years time. i hope you get the reassurances from the doctor you need

Take care
xx

I had CIN III (worst abnormality before cancer), had a small operation, and went on to have a normal pregnancy & birth in less than two years. It could have happened before but we were not trying. Try not to worry.

Mung · 16/11/2007 15:18

How did it go with the doc? I hope you are OK.

Oh yes - I had that (CINIII - the worst abnormality). Oct '05 - lasered off and then conceived in March and given the all clear a year later (pregnancy and birth are actually very good for this sort of thing apparently. Baby scrapes all the abnormal cells off as it comes out . PG with my 2nd 9.5 months later so will go for another check 3 months after the birth. My consultant was not in the least bit concerned about any of it, so i don't think you should be! She thought it had been progressing (ultra slowly as it does) and you have loads of time to sort it out etc.

debliz5 · 17/11/2007 12:25

Thanks for checking up on me .

The doc said it doésn't necessarily mean anything serious, but it should be looked at with an incision (didn't give me the name ) and I;ll be doing it in December. I'm calmer now about it, even more now after reading your post PTIYPS! That's so incouraging. I was specially upset as it took 4 hours from the time the assistant gave the news not explaining anything to me other than saying "it's not good" untill the doc "kindly" took the time to explain things to me. During these few hours (whild googling),I was already in such a state thinking I'll make my small children orphans ...

The receptionist said that to you??? I hope you are going to complain!!!

Im glad the doctor was able to put your mind at rest though.

Mung · 19/11/2007 10:09

I am glad you are feeloing better about it all. I cannot believe the receptionist said that...she needs to understand the consequences of what she said. I hope you are going to complain about it.
