What can I do about sore finger joints?

The joints nearest the fingernail are intermittently sore on most of my fingers. Not when they're at rest but some actions have either a sharp pain like a wasp sting or a burning pain. Would taking glucosamine help? Are there any other supplement that I could take?

I use my fingers a lot (doesn't everyone) but I do a lot of quilt making, which has hugely increased over lockdown and I think that might be what's causing it. I need to apply downward pressure when I'm rotary cutting and there's also a fair amount of control needed when wrangling a heavy quilt under the machine needle. I don't want to stop making quilts as I enjoy it, but I also don't want to get to the stage where I can't do it anymore.

Bumping, I'm sure someone must have had similar problems

is it the same pain and inflammation on both hands?

Firstly, maybe get it checked out to rule out rheumatoid arthritis.

Secondly, I was having pain in those joints last year - swelling and soreness, like a burning sensation. I started taking high dose vitamin C on my mother's recommendation and it went away practically overnight.

I'm not one for woo remedies, but it bloody well worked. I was quite annoyed, as my mum can be quite woo and I normally roll my eyes and disregard.

I still take 500-1000mg of vitamin C every day and the joint pain hasn't come back. I've also noticed some other random pains have disappeared. I've started taking curcumin, fish oil, iron and vitamin D too.

I don't think it's arthritis, there's no swelling and the pain is only when in use with pressure. So clenching and opening doesn't hurt but using my rotary cutter or carrying a full mug or clicking the light switch does.

Interesting about the vitamin C. It's only just occurred to me now that you've said it that I used to take krill oil supplements every night but stopped because I ran out and because I wasn't going to the health food shop I wasn't prompted to buy it again. And the pain has started since then.

I suspect mine was the start of RA, which is why I mentioned it. It runs in my family, but I haven't had it checked out yet because since I started the supplements the symptoms have gone away. I'm not going to go on medications unless I have to, so I'm just keeping an eye on it and making notes about my symptoms every day.

Anyway, vit C is supposed to help with healing and inflammation, and anecdotally it worked like a charm for me. I take it in powder form (ascorbic acid) as it's cheapest that way - I buy in big bags online and just eat it off a teaspoon with a big glass of water.

I will stock up on likely vitamins then. I have been meaning to order krill oil online anyway, so I'll do that today. I was taking it for my skin which is super dry and inclined to be scaly. It was a lot more supple with the krill oil and is now back to being dry, flakey and scaly. I'm building a picture of absolute gorgeousness, aren't I? Grin

Ha ha, I feel your pain. My hair is like straw these days as I moved to a sunny country and didn't think about protecting it. I've cut it as short as my face shape will bear to try to get down to the non-frizzled bit.

I've also got a constantly hay fever-crusted nose and itchy, red eyes at the moment, as there's SO much pollen here. I don't usually react much to it, but this year is terrible and I can't sleep because of the blocked sinuses. I'm a right state.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 03/05/2021 15:44

Hay fever is awful, I hope you're feeling better soon. I get tree pollen hay fever so I'm also under the weather with it at the moment. My nose and sinuses are ok but as it's birch pollen time I am coughing non-stop and I have oral allergy syndrome so my tongue keeps swelling up. If you have access to a sympathetic GP then I can recommend my prescription anti-histamine which is far better than the over the counter version. It's called Drynol and the active ingredient is bilastine.

Oh good tip, thanks, I’ll look into it. I’m not usually a sufferer, just have the odd reaction to dust and the like now and then. I have no idea which specific thing (or things) I’m reacting to. There are thousands of flowers, trees, grasses going to seed at the moment and it’s windy, dry and sunny. I can literally see the seeds floating around the house. Also have a dog and three cats that are moulting. I’ve blown my nose so much it’s bleeding and scabbing over and over. I got an over the counter nasal spray this morning which seems to be helping a bit. I’ve also taken to squeezing the juice from an aloe vera leaf into my nose to soften it all up. Grim.

I seem to remember a Dr saying sore hand joints are a sign of vit d deficiency.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 03/05/2021 17:34

Thanks, I will take vitamin D too. I still have a spray one in the cupboard, I just got very lax about taking it.
