FINALLY started taking thyroxine - have been having problems for quite a while now - its helping slightly - but it is making me itch like hell - tiny spots (not red) you cant really see but can feel and itch, mostly tops of arms and lower back

i dont understand why - thyroxine is basically just being replaced so whatsthe prob?

my gp (who is a darling, i love him. hes gorgeous too) is on holiday til the 25th or thereabouts so i cant go and see him t il then

tia

What dosage are you on ? I'm on 150mcg a day and have never had any side effects - def no itchy spots. Could it be an allergic reaction to something else - new soap or washing powder ?

nailpolish · 14/11/2007 09:26

ive just started on 50mcg/day - will probably be going up next month which is making me worry more

maybe it could be something else but its such a co-incidence that it started the same time

i havent got new washing powder or anything

I also take it and have never had any reaction to it at all, isn't there a stand in doctor you could see?

Also its meant to take about 8 weeks to take effect properly, so if you are reacting to it, its probably to another ingredient in the tablets, so they might be able to put you on a different version.

thanks angua.

i htink you are right

An overactive thyroid can cause itchiness.

You must be taking Levothyroxine for UNDER active, but maybe the dose has made it go OVERactive? I had VERY itchy legs with overactive thyroid.

nailpolish · 14/11/2007 09:34

oh emma that is very interesting

yes i do have underactive - i wonder if the does im on is too high and its making me overactive?

its a very small dose though

i have no other symptoms of over active

oh fgs i have had this saga for about a year now, i wish it would get sorted

50mcg/day is quite a low dose so I would have thought even less likely to cause any problems. There's nothing in the side effects section of the leaflet in my pack mentioning itchy spots either. As you say it is just replacing something your body should produce anyway and apparently your body should produce at least 150mcg a day, according to my consultant so he said you shouldn't have any problems with overdosage until you are taking a higher dose than that. Unless you are allergic to one of the other ingredients, which in my brand is things like acacia powder and sodium citrate, I wonder if it is just a coincidence it started at the same time as you began the Thyroxine ?Have you Googled Levothyroxine +itchy spots to see if anything useful comes up ?

Isawbumperkissingsantaclaus · 14/11/2007 09:35

Just started taking it too, about 3 days ago, only 25mcg. No advice but just thought I'd join the 'support for people on Levothyroxine' thread !

EmmaJW1976 · 14/11/2007 09:36

well the itchy legs was the first symptom I had. Then palpitations, night sweats, being restless and huge weightloss (which I LOVED at the time!!). The doctor said it was a bit like being on speed

I've never taken thyroxine so not sure about doses etc, just remember how itchy I was!

nailpolish · 14/11/2007 09:37

ive googled to the death and there is nothing at all!

Maybe try something like Lanacane cream for the itching whilst you are awaiting the return of your gorgeous GP - my GP is lovely too but unfortunately looks about 15 and is def. not gorgeous!

nailpolish · 14/11/2007 09:53

i might go and talk to pharmacy. thanks
