I had a tooth out yesterday and am a bit concerned about the level of pain I am in ...

I had the tooth out yesterday afternoon and am still in a lot of pain. It hurts to open my mouth wide or move my jaw from side to side. The pain is bad enough to be at the forefront of my mind (ie doing things doesn't take my mind off it) but I am coping without painkillers atm (but only just!)

Should it be settling down now? It still hurts as much as it did this time yesterday. I'm a bit concerned that I might have an ongoing infection (though no pus/swelling/bad smell or anything).

If you have had a tooth out, how long before it stopped hurting?

Another victim of dry socket here. Ring your dentist tomorrow. They'll need to "redress" the wound. It is worse said than done.
Mind you if you don't have bad smeel and are coping without painkillers you might feeel better tomorrow? (hopeful emoticon)

francagoestohollywood · 13/11/2007 22:42

smell.
and take the ibuprofen .

Miaou · 13/11/2007 22:44

I hope so! I just don't want it to get worse because I am breastfeeding so there is always the complication of what I can take if I need antibiotics etc.

An extra complication is that I have no dentist and had emergency treatment for it.

(franca I gave birth without pain relief so I'm not reading too much into the managing without painkillers bit - I think I must have a high threshold!)

(I gave birth without painkillers twice, but there's nothing worse than toothache. Don't take ibuprofen if you are b/feeding, just take paracetamol. Do ring the emergency dentist tomorrow if you're still in pain. They prefer to "redress" the wound rather than prescribing antibiotics. Don't neglect it, I learnt from bitter experience - long story - never to neglect toothache.)

I'd be surprised if you have an infection this fast, unless it was there before, but, there are plenty of Anti B's you can take when breastfeeding Just that occasionally they go thorugh to br/milk and give your baby the runs... but not always, and not all do this.

The best thing to take is one paracetamol, and one ibuprofen. really good combination of analgesia for dental pain, and not too potent either dont be a martyr, its bloody awful dental pain.

Do hope its better tomorrow, and yes, it can go on for a few days post extraction... in my experience, if that reassures at all?

Miaou · 13/11/2007 22:58

Thank you all, yes that is reassuring susie

Cali, I don't think I've got a dry socket - there's nothing to see on the site of the extraction. I've just rinsed my mouth with oraldene and it didn't hurt more which suggests there is no exposed nerve, which is good.

Franca, I think I will give it until tomorrow pm and if it's not got any better I will ring to see what they say - ikwym about not neglecting toothache (I still feel very upset about having to have a tooth out and am paranoid about my teeth!)

lol cali!!

This extraction is as the result of an abcess, my second in three months (first one was on a different tooth). That's what 4 pregnancies does to your teeth I guess (that and crap genes ). I remember thinking that I'd happily go through labour again rather than the pain of that first abcess (about four weeks after ds2 was born so still fresh in my mind too!)

Do you know where they stuck the needle in for the pain killers? I had similar trouble opening my jaw when I had my wisdom teeth out because they stuck a needle in muscles connecting my jaw, not my gum and it got a bit swollen. That is what it felt like anyway. I never asked so I don't know for sure. I think the needles can hurt as much as the treatment sometimes.

If it is something this simple it should be a bit better tomorrow. If not, as the others say, see your dentist to get checked out. I hope you are OK though - tooth pain is the pits. I have had an abcess too and you have my sympathy.

Miaou · 13/11/2007 23:24

Hmm interesting niecie; the area that hurts the most is the area where I was injected.
