Post nasal drip or reflux?

I've had allergic asthma for 20 years and use seretide inhalers. Also hay fever and a constant sniffle for which I use a nasal spray.
I've always had a problem with coughing when I lay flat though it wears off after a while. If I do Pilates etc I cough constantly, it feels like liquid pours into my lungs.
Six months ago this started at night in bed. I wake up with my chest congested and then I'm coughing constantly to clear my throat.
I thought it must be asthma related but my GP suggested it could be silent reflux or post nasal drip. She gave me gaviscon, and told me to increase the nasal spray I use (nasonex) and try anti histamines.

I'm convinced it's not gastric. I have never had any gastric symptoms and the gaviscon doesn't seem to help. I also take omeprozole because I have oral steroids but I don't find it makes any difference.
So I think it's the runny nose .

Does anyone have PND and what are the symptoms?

I had it at the start of the pandemic, coughing whenever I started to talk was the main one, coughing while eating or drinking too, that was bad because of the danger of bits of food or drink flying out, the coughs just came from nowhere, no warning. No congestion, just tickly coughs. It was also at that time where any sort of coughing was enough to make your colleagues run for the hills. A steroid nasal spray sorted it, so far it hasn't come back.

I have the same problem and it’s miserable because I’m just constantly coughing.

I’m on a steroid nasal spray and I think it’s being exacerbated by hay fever. I did actually have surgery for gastro a few years ago because I had reflux and the respiratory problems were believed to be part of that but the surgery hasn’t fixed it.

I have a steroid nasal spray which helps a bit. I've tried a neti pot and that's quite good for hayfever but no noticeable improvement in the cough. Going to the dentist is a nightmare as you have to lie flat, then I start to cough.

I have silent reflux and periodically go through bouts of PND. All I can do is up my dosage of my PPI but I also find raising the head of the bed or sleeping propped up on pillows helps. My sympathies though-it's horrible Sad

Glad its not just me with a pnd, I have this too. I had hay-fever years ago and then it just disappeared till covid. Last march it all came back, so that and pnd I spend my mornings coughing and have a runny nose. Always fun under a mask on the school run. I take an antihistamine tablet and use a nasal spray too, I'm not sure if it helps though. Hmm

I'm beginning to think my asthma is much milder than I thought and most of my coughing is down to pnd.
@SpeckledFrogsLog what are the symptoms of silent reflux? When the GP suggested it I said "I have never had any kind of stomach issues". She said "well that's why it's called silent!"

It’s the coughing that really gets me. I find it exhausting. Suddenly my throat will tickle and it will just be this round of violent coughing to the point of retching. It keeps me and DH awake at night too.

I used to smoke a couple of cigarettes a day and eventually gave up last year, mainly because I was sick of everyone banging on about how my cough would disappear when I gave up. Except it didn’t and the tiny pleasure I had from a cigarette outside after dinner has now gone.

I’m just so tired of it. I’ve spent the last few years trying to get diagnosed and the last thing they said was rhinitis so I’ve been using a neti pot and nasal spray and it hasn’t helped.

I had years of reflux and PND and the worst of it was resolved by cutting most dairy out of my diet. I’m not mega strict about it but can tell when I’ve had more than I can tolerate.

Sorry-just spotted this. My symptoms are a persistent cough, choking episodes and a constant lump in my throat. It was horrible but is now under control with lansoprasole.

I think the reason it's called silent reflux is that you don't have the acid as you would with normal reflux.
