Hearing aid and health

So, I went for ear test today because I have been struggling to hear in a crowd or even at home (as long as there's background noise, I struggle to hear someone talking to me). My right hear is slightly better than the left, she said I might have some nerve damage, healthy hear drums. I was shocked when I was told the best hearing aid device would cost me £4,500 per pair (see the attached photo of the aid). I am wondering of there is anyone here who knows about these things and can offer suggestions on where to go to it cheaper. I will.like to shop around but I Dont even know where to turn at all. Help please

I have just been diagnosed with unilateral hearing loss. My hearing aids are $2,700 Canadian each. That’s roughly £1,600 each.

Have you spoken with your G for an audiology referral. I get my hearing aids on the NHS and they are free. It might be a bit of a wait for the initial tests but once you've had it it should be quite quick. My hearing aid doesn't look dissimilar.

NotMyDayJob · 28/04/2021 18:36

With your GP that should say!

Iwasonceabrownie · 28/04/2021 18:40

I got mine on the NHS, completely free and free batteries when you need them. Just because you're paying a large amount of money doesn't make them any better.

I will be contacting my GP tomorrow.

I got offered some.on NHS and they were awful. Very uncomfortable moulds and they make me look like I am 80+. You don't get to choose the type - your stuck whatever they offer, which on my case was behind the ear types with awful earmoulds. The tech on NHS adult aids are also up to 10 years behind. I paid around 4.5k for a pair of RITE privately. They are much better.

Stichintime · 28/04/2021 19:02

I initially had a private test and the cost would have been about 4k for hearing aids. I then thought I'd see what the NHS could offer and was very impressed. The hearing aids I got are practically invisible. Not one person has noticed I wear them!

I'm interested in knowing what area people are in who have discrete and RITE aids from NHS. My son is also a hearing aid user and was also offered BTE moulded type fittings. After the 14th ill fitting and uncomfortable mould they finally agreed to offer an open fit. I was pretty much told to suck it up and be thankful for what you are given !!

Somebodyimportant1 · 28/04/2021 19:17

Yes I think what one gets on the NHS depends on ones area #hearingaid postcode.

@Stichintime please what area are you based?

the aid will depend on the area, the bit that goes in the ear (i don't know the technical terms despite wearing them for over 15 years!) will partly depend on the type of hearing loss

My adult son has bilateral hearing loss and he has CITC aids as even as a child he wouldn’t have worn behind the ear ones . We got his last lot from Specsavers and they were about £1600 for a pair although that was a few years back .

Stichintime · 28/04/2021 19:28

I live in inner London.

verybadhairdoo · 28/04/2021 20:49

My son and I both have bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. He is mild-moderate. Mine is moderate-severe. Both BTE and RITE are suitable for our hearing loss. I've also had CIC before (privately). St Thomas Hospital in London will not provide me with anything other than moulded BTE. Uncomfortable, I can't wear them for any great lenght of time - they hurt my ears. They refuse to give me anything else. I know that RITE will fit confortably as I have bought them privately at considerable expense.
