Does anyone else get cold/numb fingers when typing?

This has been a problem as long as I can remember but it's so irritating. If I'm typing, or playing PlayStation or basically using my hands in general, my fingers will inevitably become cold, painful, and I lose the ability to feel. This makes it really hard to type because I can't feel the keys and my coordination totally goes. I used to have to wear fingerless gloves at work which the bosses hated because it looks unprofessional, but otherwise it becomes borderline impossible to type properly.

This is obviously much worse in the winter when it's cold but it's happened to me today when it's a lovely day out and I'm just so tired of it. Even if I try to warm them up, the heat just disappears again. I usually have to submerge them in very hot water to get the feeling back properly.

Does anyone else have this or am I just a strange anomaly? And does anyone know what it is? I considered Raynaud's but my skin doesn't go white or blue. My hands look normal, I just can't feel them.

Any specific parts of your hands/specific fingers, or generally all of your hands?

emmathedilemma · 28/04/2021 17:22

It definitely sounds like Reynauds. If it's affecting your day job I would talk to your GP as there are treatment options.
My hands are freezing typing right now and my right hand is colder than my left from having been on my mouse!

Raynaud's sounds likely. I've had it since I was a teen... Driving in winter is worst. They do go totally white! Have learned to have a small 1 litre hot water bottle in the car with me on the journey in, which then goes and sits on my knee in the office and is periodically refilled. Not quite as bad now it's getting warmer but it still happens in summer if I go into the freezer section of a supermarket. The Raynaud's website is useful.

Take photos or videos to the GP, as surgeries are usually warm and so you couldn't show them properly!

I used to get this when typing a lot. You can get a gel 'cushion' to rest your wrists on.

It's all the fingers. The palms don’t tend to be as bad but they are cold too.

I'll do some more research into Raynaud's. One of my school friends had it and she's always been so ill, I kind of assumed it couldn't be the same thing. But maybe it's a lesser case? Although she had scleroderma as well so that might be why...

Thanks for the advice, all. It drives me up the wall.

Freezers, yes! I loathe having to touch anything in my freezer because I know I won't be able to feel my hands for ages after 🙄

Aside from Reynaulds, could it be peripheral neuropathy?

DoTheNextRightThing · 29/04/2021 21:09

I've never heard of that. I'll do some googling.

It happened again tonight bringing the washing it 🙄 never ends

Get some of the flexible oven gauntlets. They are great for ovens but are just as good if you are digging about in a freezer!

these sort of things
