How many hours sleep do you get a night on average?

Interested to know how much sleep people get on average and how much they feel they need to 'function'?

I currently have a newborn so running on very little atm but then I also know that I'm the type of person who usually needs about 7/8 hours to feel human.

I really need my sleep and aim for 9 hours.

I'm old, mind!

I sometimes nod off in the evenings too. Blush

I need 9 hours to feel human the next day. Not always possible with children but I go to bed at the same time as them and wake up before them so I can have my morning coffee in peace.

I get between 6.5 and 7.5 most nights according to my fitbit so plenty to get by although 8 hours would be nice. I feel best if I get uninterrupted sleep for the first 4 hours so get a good chunk of deep sleep. That rarely happens as I go to sleep earlier than my dh and he wakes me coming to bed. Not his fault, ridiculously light sleeper since having kids.

7-8 hours and I feel fine if I sleep more I feel quite sluggish

Caspianberg · 28/04/2021 07:36

About 5hrs. 12 month old still wakes a couple of times a night.

It’s an improvement on the 3-4hrs we had been getting.

Pre baby I needed 7-8hrs. Well I still need that but hey

DinosaurDiana · 28/04/2021 07:37

Now that I no longer sleep with a snoring husband, I wake up naturally after around 8 hours.
If my body wasn’t used to getting up for work/school I reckon I would get nearer to 9.

HardcoreParkour · 28/04/2021 07:42

I function best on 8hrs sleep but currently getting between 6-7 (I have a 10 month old).

Florencenotflo · 28/04/2021 07:44

At the moment I'm getting around 4-5 hours a night 😩 not always in one block either. My kids are early risers and always have been. Dd 5y/o is up by 6 but since the clocks changed she's now up at 5:30.

My 18 month old wakes up in the night at the moment. I have no idea why, she's not hungry she just seems so upset. But last night it took over an hour to calm her down and settle her back to sleep.

Ideally, 6-7 hours unbroken would be perfect for me.

Between 6.5 and 7.5 I find I don't need as much when it's lighter mornings. . In winter probably 8 hours

name674398 · 28/04/2021 07:45

8+, but I sure as heck didn't get that with a newborn. I was getting FA sleep back then, it was horrendous, thank goodness for maternity leave! It isn't forever, but no I didn't feel human for several months!

lazylinguist · 28/04/2021 07:46

7-8 hours. I can never sleep more than 8, even if I'm really tired or have no reason to get up on time. I have teenagers, a largely non-snoring dh and very regular bedtimes, so aside from very occasional random insomnia there's nothing much to stop me from getting my 7-8 hours.

Hellocatshome · 28/04/2021 07:47

7 to 8. DH is perfectly functional after 4!

lazylinguist · 28/04/2021 07:48

Oh and I was very lucky when mine were babies too - both slept through from about 3 months. I can function really well on a couple of nights of not enough sleep, but not much more than that.

itsgettingwierd · 28/04/2021 07:57

I don't get regular sleep because my ds is a swimmer.

Some nights I get 6 hours and others 10!

I try an average it as 8 hours a night over the week. I go to bed at 9pm except the 2 evenings we aren't home until gone 9.30!

I also find as above poster than I'm much better if I manage the first 4 hours without waking up and get a really deep sleep.

KFleming · 28/04/2021 08:10

I need about 9. I get much less with a toddler who wakes up so early.
