Palpitations - do I need this checked out.

I’ve had big standard palpitations for ages, never given them a second thought.

The last 2 instances I’ve been completely at rest, no stress, not anxious but the palpitations have been long and I’ve had to really fight to not faint. My vision went, lightheaded etc. I was absolutely fine afterwards but now obviously slightly concerned!

I have slight pains in my chest when I lay flat, nothing so bad it takes my breath away, but I can feel it if that makes sense.

Will be booking a drs appointment but they’re like hens teeth atm.

I think if you tell the doctors how you are feeling when booking the appointment, they will hopefully see you today. I know it's a nightmare seeing a doctor at the moment! I hope you are ok.

The way you described it definitely sounds like it's worth investigating.

As you probably know from when you had it checked out before it can be very difficult to try and catch an arrhythmia in doctor's office so can quite off take multiple visits, multiple 24 monitors, etc.

It's easier for some doctors to just blame anxiety. Not saying yours isn't/wasn't anxiety.

I definitely think you should go to doctor mostly because of the syncope symptoms you experienced which would accompany an arrhythmia and who knows what kind it is this time.

I'm not a medical professional though so my opinion is pretty much worthless :)

Yes....I was the same last autumn. Doctor immediately referred me for blood tests and the results were so poor he arranged a cardiologist appointment. Lots of tests and a huge amount of drugs, plus cardioversion.....I'm fine now but on meds for life. Please go!

QwertyGirly · 27/04/2021 08:57

I had a few episodes when my palpitations were quite frequent and intense, so I had a few tests too. Had a 72 hour heart monitor. It turns out that I had loads more palpitations that were undetected, and I have what is called 'ectopic heartbeats' so I am monitored regularly but no medication still. Just less alcohol, and less cafeine

Crocidura · 27/04/2021 09:02

I had this (also having had palpitations for years, but they got worse quite suddenly). It was my thyroid. Plus a slightly dodgy heart but it seems to have calmed down since treatment on my thyroid so hopefully can be left alone for now. May need an ablation at some point I guess.

Zancah · 27/04/2021 09:07

Following, I have palpitations too at night. I have an Apple Watch and try to track them if they are particularly bad. I went to the docs about it and got fobbed off, but it was a few years ago now. I think it's time I went back.

I’m going to pop to the walk in I think, it’s next to DD’s nursery so better than waiting weeks for my dr.

@Shelddd yes if it wasn’t for the losing vision I wouldn’t have worried, but it wasn’t pleasant!

@Zancah I’ll let you know how I get on, but I would go get checked out if it’s worrying you.

Please get checked. I had those symptoms. Initially my GP thought it was a vitamin deficiency. It turned out to be heart failure (caused by previous chemotherapy).

There are lots of things it could be. A lot is known about the heart and it's amazing how easily most things are treated.

I had dreadful palpitations and pain in my heart when lying down which turned out to be iron deficiency. What is your diet like OP?

I did think either iron or thyroid tbh. I’ll be very happy if it’s something that simple and I’m not about to drop dead!

I’ve had palpitations on and off for about 10 years. It’s arrhythmia, menopause related. I’ve seen a cardiologist and had 34 hour monitor, x ray, ultrasound, and my heart is in pretty good shape, it’s just one of those things. I take a daily beta blocker which helps, and if they do break through I can take an extra dose

Mabelene · 27/04/2021 09:44

24 hour monitor

CovidCrow · 27/04/2021 09:48

Yes hopefully it is something easily fixed, I'm sure it will be.

Just a heads up my ferritin/iron levels were within the 'normal' range but the GP tried me on iron tablets anyway and sure enough after a few weeks my symptoms were gone. So you can still be deficient even though it doesn't necessarily show up in your bloods.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 27/04/2021 11:21

I had this for about a year, turned out to be thyroid and low iron. On meds for both now and feel a million times better. Get checked ASAP, Op.

Exactly the same as you the beta blockers help as does avoiding caffeine alcohol especially in the evening. I also take gaviscon to avoid reflux at night which can set off similar feelings

I've had palpitations of various descriptions since my mid 50s.
The worst attacks were those where my heart rate was very fast and I was almost passing out. They thought it might be SVT.
Initially the GP arranged 24 hour monitor which fortunately picked them up(even though I hadn't noticed any). I have subsequently had echo, 3 day monitor, stress test and electrophysiology study where they insert wires through a vein and try to trigger attacks.
It's fairly stable now controlled by calcium channel blockers. I have no caffiene.
