Bells palsy

Recently been diagnosed with bells palsy (had it before but years and years ago) and feeling very sorry for myself.
Has anyone had it recently and have any advice.
Very self conscious of how it looks and struggling to eat and talk, I keep sneaking off to cry so my children can't see me upset.
Hoping that it goes away quite quickly but you just can't call it.
Thought I'd moan to you lovely lot so I don't have to bother anyone in real life.
If no tips on the medical side then any ideas of things I could do to cheer myself up.
Called in sick so have some time while the kids are in school.
Thanks 😊

Call your GP, I was put on something (steroids?) the same day and was told the earlier the better for faster recovery and full recovery.

I feel for you, it is rotten, so tiring just to speak, eat, drink. I was frustrated, embarrassed and very tearful. You must rest as much as you can as recovering from the virus that caused it.

I cheered myself up by looking at pics famous people who have had it - George clooney, piers Brosnan

Thanks

Ooh I'll definitely look up celebs with bells palsy.
It's awful you're right, such an effort to just talk, eat and drink. Maybe I'll lose a few pounds though if I can't eat (silver lining and all that Wink).
I'm feeling really down but trying to put on a brave face.
Yes I started steroid treatment on day 1 so hopefully that helps, been looking up acupuncture but not sure if it will help.
Do you remember how long yours lasted?

Poor you, it’s miserable isn’t it. Dh has been diagnosed with it this afternoon ☹️. His started this morning as he noticed he couldn’t drink his tea properly.

We have been to the gp and he’s been put on steroids for 2 weeks along with eye drops and advised to tape his eye shut at night to avoid damage.

My cousin had it recently and his went in a few weeks. He had acupuncture too which seemed to help. He said to google famous people who had it too!!

Earlybirdmissedtheworm · 26/04/2021 21:22

I've actually been googling acupuncture today and also thinking of trying CBD oil and B12.
Just anything really, I'm so down.
Hope your husband is ok, was he given omeperazole too? I said I wasn't going to take them but told I must so wondered if this was for everyone - the steroids I have are prednisolone.

He is already on a low dose of steroid for his arthritis so takes omeprazole due to that.

HelloDaisy · 26/04/2021 23:08

Dh is doing ok at the moment thank you, just fed up with being ill again.

Yes he’s on Prednisolone too. I think the Omeprazole is to protect your stomach whilst on the steroids.

I’ve just read that chiropractic treatment can help so I will ring my friend tomorrow who is a chiropractor and ask. I’ll let you know what she says 😊.

Look after yourself and rest when you can.

@HelloDaisy how is your husband today? I hope he's ok.
I think I'm feeling more upbeat and trying to be positive.
I plan to have a hot bath and put some fake tan on tonight to make me feel better, it may take my attention off of my dodgy face and onto my dodgy tan 😆

Glad you are feeling more up beat today.

Dh is fed up today. He has been shielding due to covid so he was looking forward to getting out more now shielding has stopped but seems to have another hurdle to get over...

Still on the plus side he’s ok in that he seems to have got it mildly and apart from dribbling when he drinks he’s managing alright. I think the weather hasn’t helped today so hopefully he will feel better tomorrow.

I might suggest he has a relaxing bath but doubt he wants to use my fake tan!! Enjoy your pampering session tonight 😊.

@HelloDaisy just wondering how your husband is doing?
Hoping he's on the mend and feeling better about it all.

Earlybirdmissedtheworm He’s feeling much better thank you. It seems to have all cleared up already and he’s now back on arthritis meds so all good.

How are you? Did you try the acupuncture? Hope all is good with you...

Earlybirdmissedtheworm · 15/05/2021 21:51

@HelloDaisy I am so pleased to hear that he is better.
I'm ok, getting there but not 100% yet unfortunately.
I have had 6 sessions of acupuncture and it does seem to be helping although could be coincidence. I have gained some movement back in my cheek muscle and can slightly raise my eyebrow now but that's it.
I'm glad to have that though as I feel I'm going in the right direction, slowly slowly but I'll get there.

How are you feeling and healing? I was diagnosed with BP on Tuesday after being taken to stroke unit in ambulance. It is all very traumatic so I think the crying etc is perfectly normal process. A good friend went through it a few years ago and said the same. She recovered in about 2 weeks. I tried a an aromatherapy massage -very gentle and very low strength oil- for my immune system. I will have one each week. Not sure if it will speed recovery up but it did make me feel more relaxed. My friend had a fast recovery and recommended finding someone who does neurostructural integration technique (NTC.) I haven't looked into it yet but there is a website where practitioners are listed.
