Ok so it's been 'suggested' that I may have Glandular fever, is there anything I should know?

I had GF when I was 16. It varies a lot from person to person - my sister had it at the same time and was just ill for 3 weeks - it took a bit longer for me. If you're completely better before you have your blood test then I'd doubt it's GF, it tends to knock you out quite badly. Anyway, there isn't really a treatment per se, just do the usual - keep warm, drink lots of fluids etc. and at least then you'll be doing the right thing even if it turns out to have been something else. Good luck, hope you feel better soon.

3littlefrogs · 13/11/2007 17:58

The reason you need the blood test is because you must not have antibiotics if it is GF, so it is important to either confirm or exclude.

Ledodgy · 13/11/2007 18:19

I hope it isn't either. I had it at 17 and it took me a year to recover fully. Have you got a very, very bad sore throat?

ok practial things you should know

If it is
you will need a LOT of help and a LOT of rest

ArmadilloDaMan · 13/11/2007 18:38

Both me and my sister had GF. If you have it I hope you have it mildly.

I had it for a couple of years. Took another couple to recover and still have crappy immunity. MY glands swell if I even think of getting ill.

Not nice.

Rest rest and more rest if you have it and bear in mind it takes quite a while to get over.

thebecster · 13/11/2007 20:05

I still have rubbish immunity too. But just so this isn't too doom-laden, my sister's immunity is fine. Some people get completely knocked out by it, like me, and the others on this thread. But some people do fight it off within a few weeks and are good as new. If it's GF though it will be weeks rather than days. Make sure you take good care of yourself - if you do have GF you'll need lots of rest.

Essbee - sorry to hear you're still feeling ill

is there anything we can do to help?

BadKitten · 19/11/2007 12:16

I did read one interesting thing you should probably know if it is glandular fever. Around 80% of people who take amoxicillin while having glandular fever will get a rash (sometimes making people think they are allergic to it when they aren't)

I hope its not and that you feel much better soon. It sounds really rough. You need to take all the help you can get from friends.

Myrtle1 · 20/11/2007 09:41

Essbee, I had GF when I was 19. I used to get a lot of night sweats with it and feel exhausted. I took echinacea at the time which I think helped and rested. Take whatever opportunity you can to rest and try and eat well. Hope you feel better soon and that it isn't GF.

Do go Essbee, GF can take ages to get over I think. Or it could be something else, it would be better to know.

Can you rearrange the blood test for a day which is easier to make? Is there a day you're not working at the moment?

I don't want to scare you but I had glandular fever 3 years ago an it took 6 months to go It was awful, docs didn't diagnose me for months and I was so ill, at one point I thought it was all in my head! I was exhausted, had the sore throat, headaches, swollen glands, lost a stone (I'm only 8 and a half to begin with!). My mum actually started worrying that it was something very serious. So def go for your blood test, Im sure I made it worse by trying to get up and on with things like work, seeing my friends etc. If it's glandular fever you really need to rest and take things easy.
Saying that my sister had it a few months before me and hers was gone in a few weeks, just your luck really.

Fennel · 21/11/2007 13:26

Yes do go. I'm sure your work will be sympathetic - after all the sooner you find out what it is and treat it, the sooner you can be back working hard for them.
