Too little salt??

Is there anyone else who struggles with parents who think that adding salt to your vegetables and dinner generally is GOOD for you? I have this debate every meal time with my in laws and my mum. They think I am being unhealthy by not adding any salt whilst cooking. I though there is enough natural salt in food to cover your allowance and adding salt during cooking or after is JUST for taste.

it's just for taste. you will get enough from "invisible" sources such as bread, tinned baked beans etc. i don't know if this attitude stems from when people used to get goitres from too little iodine (salt was iodised for this very purpose)

I eat very little processed food and do a lot of sport, so in my case, salt really is good for me (no salt, no sweat) so I add it, but generally, no, you don't need to add it if you live in a temperate climate like the uk and eat food with salt in it like bundle mentioned...

Thank you. I sort of knew it was okay but am under pressure from parents to add more salt. TBH I have got so used to it without salt most processed and restaurant food now tastes too salty.

There is generally some truth in the older generations' beliefs, and back in the day they probably needed to salt things more as they didn't eat much processed food.

You need salt, but most people don't need much. I am similar - OMDB - lots of endurance training and water, and very little processed food on average, so I use sea salt or rock salt (never white refined running salt!) at the table.

I also happen to have very low blood pressure (average 90/65), which almost never causes me any problems, but I know about it if dehydrated or low in electrolytes!

The kids love savoury things like marmite and shop hummus - and tbh I let them as they are so active and drink like fish anyway!
