Hi, sorry I know I already started a thread on UTI's but I've just been prescribed Ciprofloxacin and I've read a lot of horror stories on the side effects. I wondered if anyone's taken them?xx

@Magic1231 I've had Ciprofluaxin and I was fine. Just try to keep an eye on any symptoms (without wishing yourself into them IYSWIM).
Fingers crossed 🤞

Magic1231 · 24/04/2021 19:35

Did you take them for a UTI?
I know what you mean, part of me wishes I'd not googled it... it's got me very worked up and reluctant to take them Confused nightmare xxx

Is this a further course? The benefits far out weigh the minuscule risk of side effects - i already have one of the serious side effects listed which can be made worse but after a lengthy discussion with my rheum consultant took them and was fine

Loli2020 · 24/04/2021 19:51

I am constantly on cipro... paired with another antibiotic metronidazole (due to infections caused by Crohn's disease). Personally, the warnings are worse than the reality but I do tend to lose appetite and have fatigue when on them.

I would say I am on them an average of 12 weeks a year for the past 2 years... including a 6 week solid period, but the side effects have never worsened or eased! X

Magic1231 · 24/04/2021 20:29

@loli2020 Ahhh I'm sorry you suffer from crohn's disease, that's reassuring to hear ciprofloxacin helps you though.
I've already lost my appetite today and am very fatigued so there wouldn't be much change there haha xxx

@limegreenbogie I was on cephalexin, but at day 5 and feeling no better, infact worse today it would seem they dont work for me... despite the doctor saying they were the right ones to treat it.
I googled Ciprofloxacin and was terrified by what a lot of people were saying xxx

@Magic1231 yes, I took them for urine infections when trimethoprim did nothing.
Try not to look at side effects too much. One of my (hospital administered) medications has a side effect of danger of death.

limegreenbogie · 24/04/2021 20:57

I normally have them as the third antibiotic for a uti. Hope you feel better soon, I haven't had any side effects on them.

Magic1231 · 24/04/2021 21:38

Thankyou, I appreciate that xxx

I've not been put on Trimethoprim, which km surprised by as I know that's a common one.

Do you find ciprofloxacin to work quickly?

Hospital gave me a double dose and the effects were horrific I won’t lie so just be careful and don’t mix with other anti biotics

polkadotpixie · 25/04/2021 23:50

I had them for a UTI, no major side effects...bit of nausea and diarrhoea is all

Magic1231 · 26/04/2021 10:00

Did they work for you?x

DagenhamRoundhouse · 26/04/2021 10:04

I am prone to cystitis and used to always be given Trimethoprim. I understand that they were starting to see resistance to it so switched to Nitrofurantoin as the routine first line treatment. One a few years ago my UTI didn't clear up so I got Ciprofloxacin from the hospital emergency GP. Powerful stuff, but it did the job. I was on it for a week and felt like I had a kind of flu, tired and loss of appetite. But it works!

DagenhamRoundhouse · 26/04/2021 10:05

Probably not a good idea to google a drug name! You'll see all kinds of horror stories and they may well not apply to you in any way.

Magic1231 · 26/04/2021 11:56

No, that's very true!
I just noticed it seemed to come with a lot more warnings than the other antibiotics.
I already feel like I have a sort of flu, I'm currently on cefalexin it's a case of is the UTI entirely making me feel this way or side effects too x

I’ve had this for persistent Utis that won’t shift and it’s amazing stuff. I have kidney issues and take cefalexin daily long term but when that doesn’t work I have cipro and it does the job.

yikesanotherbooboo · 26/04/2021 12:14

It is a very effective antibiotic for many conditions and regularly used as second or third line for utis ie if the first courses have been ineffective against the particular bug causing your current uti. If you are ill enough to need antibiotics I would assume that your doctor has picked the best option for you. Any drug has common and rare and very rare side effects, it is to be expected , so you don't take it if you don't need it. However , if the benefits outweigh the downsides a balancing act that the dr considers with the patient then go ahead. Googling in this situation is not helpful.

Magic1231 · 26/04/2021 12:45

Trouble is you speak to different doctors and they have conflicting advice... I spoke to one today and he suggested I take a 7 day course of nitrofurantoin and wasnt sure why i wasnt just prescribed more of them instead of the cefalexin sigh it's a nightmare x

Beezkneezhoney · 31/01/2022 18:41

Magic1231 did you end up taking it?

Magic1231 · 12/02/2022 11:46

Hi @beezkneezhoney sorry, I only just saw this. I didnt end up taking them in the end, I just continued with the D mannose and luckily it did the trick. The infection had cleared up from the other antis, just needed a bit of time to settle down I think. I think once you get into an anxious state you just worry about taking anything dont you, I'm sure the antis wouldn't have been as bad as I was worrying they were xxx
