Smelly down below

I need some advice please as my 2 year old is very smelly down below. its a fishy smell that i can't get rid of even when she comes out of the bath its lingering and after a few hours its really strong. she's happy in herself (apart from a cold) so i don't think its an infection. Please advise me if you can - its worrying me no end!

do you think she might have put something up there ?

BecauseImWorthIt · 13/11/2007 11:47

I would definitely take her to the GP to investigate this further. Any sort of smell like this does not bode well!

Sweetiesandcakes · 13/11/2007 11:50

She is alwys fiddling with it when ever her pants her off. I'm scared to take her to the GP as I'm horrified of her having to go through being poked and prodded down there.

To a two-year-old, it's no different from being poked and prodded anywhere else.

MaryAnnSingleton · 13/11/2007 11:52

would be much better to have it checked out than leave her with a possible infection or foreign body inside her

Bonaventura · 13/11/2007 11:53

If she's put something up there she could get a bad infection. See GP immediately, no messing.

iveaskedyougentlemenofthepress · 13/11/2007 11:54

I thought a fishy smell was a sign of infection or bacterial activity - bacterial vaginosis or some similar name? Don't think it has to have lots of other symptoms. I'd go to the GP, definitely.

Sweetiesandcakes · 13/11/2007 11:58

I've just down some research on the net and it says that if a child is bathed/washed too regulary then the soap can kill off the good bacteria and cause the body to overact hence giving out the smell. My mum is picking her up from nursery in a moment so I've asked her to have a sniff just in case I'm making a moountail out of a molehill. If not then i will def make and appointment.

As far as her putting something up there - well i'm not sure when she would have the chance. I do leave her to go to the loo alone but there is nothing she could insert and she wears nappys in bed. i suppose some tissue could have got caught??!!

you said she was often fiddling with herself when her pants are off, so it'd be easy enough to stick something in (apologies if it sounds indelicate !) -I would just go to the doctors anyway.

Nbg · 13/11/2007 14:35

It could even be a scratch thats got a little bit infected.
If shes been fiddling down there and shes had a broken nail or something, it would have been easy for her to catch herself.

mummyblueyes · 13/11/2007 16:34

it does sound bacterial, but nothing a short course of antibiotics couldn't deal with!

Bonaventura · 14/11/2007 16:04

TBH, I'd make that appointment whatever your mum says. Don't take risks with dd's health.

Surfermum · 14/11/2007 16:19

DD (4.5) is very "fishy" at the moment, and isn't able to get to the loo quick enough and is having lots of accidents, especially at school. Plus she's quite red around her bits.

I took her to the doctors yesterday and they've given me some cream, and said she has vulvitis. I thought the fishy smell meant she had a urine infection, but they said not necessarily (they're checking anyway) it could be an infection on the outside.

Take her to the docs because if she does have an infection the sooner it's sorted the better. Poor old dd is having hell of a time with it - she's not poorly, just having loads of accidents and that embarassing for her at school.
