Who do I complain to about GP surgery?

Disclaimer if you're someone who works in public services who thinks that every post complaining about the services is GP NHS or public services bashing then please don't comment , this post isn't for you

My GP surgery do phone appointment triage only unless they decide you should come in following the phone call .
I've tried on three seperate occasions now to get to speak to a doctor. My phone rings for approximately four seconds and then they hang up. Two of those days I called back and said hello I just missed the call can you ask the doctor to try again and they said they would and then nothing. The third of those times my phone was literally next to my thigh and I went to pick it up, read who was calling and they hung up before I could even press the accept call button. I'm not even elderly or particularly slow. I've told them every single time, please tell the doctor to let it ring for longer as I have a toddler and don't always get to the phone within a few seconds. I had to call 111 for something seperate and speaking to my GP was mentioned. When I told the doctor at 111 what was happening he said it was really naughty, that they were doing it to get through the list quicker and I should complain?

But who do I complain to and how can I make sure I get an appointment and get their sneaky tactics known about to someone who will hold them accountable?

I would like to know too

Me too. Our GP surgery hasn’t even answered tho phone for over a year now. It rings & rings then just cuts out.
The door is locked. Been told by another surgery that someone is in there “ just keep trying” Hmm

The local trust/health board?

Gwenhwyfar · 24/04/2021 12:34

You local councillor/MP? Local paper?

Goodtohear · 24/04/2021 12:57

Practice manager. If you don't feel you can approach them then ccg would be next level up.

What would be the point of complaining to the actual surgery though?
Crazycatstory · 24/04/2021 16:23

Practice manager initially. If they don’t know this is what’s happening they won’t be addressing it. They will also want to improve the patient care, and avoid you escalating this to the local ccg.

Thanks everyone! I'll try the practise manager first although I'm pretty sure they would know as it's always different doctors doing the phone calls and happens every single time!

Do that but also complain to the local MP and Health Service Ombudsman

  1. GP practice own complaint procedures to give the PM a chance to address the issue
  2. CCG - clinical commissioning group, of which your GP will likely be part of
  3. Healthwatch - if you have one in your county
  4. NHS complaints advocacy
  5. CQC although they don’t look at individual cases
