White spots suddenly appeared on toddlers teeth

Hi all. DD is 2 and very recently (as in the past couple of days) I've noticed she has some white patches on the bottom of her two front teeth. Weirdly enough it's much more noticeable first thing in the morning and then fades over the day (although it's still a little noticeable).

I've never noticed this before, they just seemed to appear suddenly over the past couple of days. DD has her teeth brushed for two minutes twice a day and doesn't consume a huge amount of sugar (doesn't drink juice) so I'd be very shocked if it's decay!

But what could it be? The only thing I can think of is that she's had quite a bad cold over the past few days so has been breathing through her mouth. I've read that this can cause teeth to almost dry out and become temporarily discoloured?

I've attached a picture so you can see what I mean. It's not the best as she's quite wriggly, but I hope you can see what I mean!

We will be ringing the dentist on Monday just to be on the safe side.

Thank you 😊

@NotBehindTheRadiatorPlease hi OP!

My daughter had the same when she was a toddler. When we asked the dentist why, they said it was due to having chicken pox. Sometimes the virus can show in the teeth!

It stayed there for at least a few years but completely gone now. Hers was more obvious than your DDs though.

@nolovelost thanks for the reply! DD hasn't had chicken pox, although she did have tonsillitis back in November? It's so strange, I've looked at pictures of her from just a couple of weeks ago and she didn't have the white spots then.

I get this even as an adult! It's a sign I've been poorly, it goes away when I'm well again.

@NotBehindTheRadiatorPlease the common cold is a virus and tonsillitis can be caused by a virus.

NotBehindTheRadiatorPlease · 24/04/2021 14:35

@Flamingo49 that is interesting. DD is currently full of cold!

I get this when I’m unwell!

Asthmatic and a serious attack brings on itchy teeth first.

Never found any research about it though.

She is breathing more through her mouth where she has a cold so the teeth get dehydrated overnight and the white patches look more pronounced in the morning. Nothing to worry about at all.

I've got this (I'm 37) but it's barely noticeable. I asked my dentist about it and he said I just had had a fever or something when I was a baby which caused it!
