Hip pain that is worse at night - help!

Can anyone help with my hip pain. I know I should probably see the GP but it’s hard to get an appointment at the moment. I broke my foot 3 years ago and since then have had an aching hip if I try to walk more than 5 miles. Since the beginning of last winter this has now progressed and any walking on uneven ground makes my hip ache. The pain seems to be inside the joint and not muscular. This has now progressed to keeping me awake at night and waking me up if I sleep on that side. I have tried ibuprofen and voltarol gel and nothing helps. Has anyone experienced anything similar and any tips for pain relief please?

I've been sleeping with a pillow between my knees for months now and it really helps with my hip pain
@FixTheBone thank you for your advice. I have spoken to my gp on the telephone and I am seeing them face to face tomorrow. It was quite strange though as the GP asked me what I was hoping for? Erm I am hoping to walk without pain and be able to sleep!
That's pretty normal, GPs are taught to explore 'ideas beliefs, expectations' as a way to check the appointment reached a satisfactory conclusion.

Well the GP has spoken! Trochanteric bursitis caused by my broken foot pushing my hip out. I need an MRI, physio and possible an injection in my hip. In the meantime some Naproxen so I can sleep at night! Thank you for all your replies and help I really appreciate it.

First physio today and the diagnosis is not bursitis. I have muscle loss from when I broke my foot so everything from the waist down needs building back up. Excercise, massage, heat and icing and protein shakes to help build muscle. The physio says it’s going to take time and effort to fix but at least it’s not joints !

@vestastilly Do you mind if I ask how you got on in the end? Have you managed to solve the hip pain?

I have almost identical symptoms, which (just like you) I think arose from a broken foot over a year ago. My GP also diagnosed bursitis but the exercises my physio has given me only seem to be making the pain worse. I’d love to know if anything solved it for you?

Thanks very much!

Hi @Catabogus the physio did not help at all so after 6 weeks I went to an osteopath and finally made some progress. When I broke my foot my pelvis compromised for it and the muscles were all out of place and got tight which then pressed on the sciatic nerve. He has put the muscles back where they should be and is now correcting the bones in my pelvis. It is slow progress and I am not pain free but it is better than it was when I started. The other thing I would recommend is paracetamol which seems better at pain relief for me than naproxen or ibuprofen which both did nothing. Hope that helps and you are
on the road to recovery soon.

I has something similar, had physio at the hospital which didn't help, I ended up seeing a sports physiotherapist who diagnosed that I wasn't walking properly due to exercising wrongly and it had done something to my ligament, best money I've ever spent. Had a couple of sports massages, gave me some exercises which I did religiously and voila!
Also I bought a knee pillow from ebay, memory foam, £5, that definitely helped until my hip was better
