Bright red blood in pop

...after going to the toilet this morning for a pop I noticed, what looked like quite a lot, or bright red blood. No pain. Had piles last year since having dc. I had been driving for an hour home from work and had to hold my poo in (sorry tmi). I'm so worried; should I be?

It sounds like it is probably related to your haemorrhoids, but if you are concerned your doctor will be the person who can help you. Is it mixed in or just around the outside of your stool? Have you had any other symptoms /signs that could point to another diagnosis? Any unintentional weight loss or change in frequency of stools?

largeginforme · 23/04/2021 08:50

@TheVeryHungryTortoise thank you for replying. It wasn't mixed it was kind of after the poo and had nothing since. No other symptoms, nothing I can think of apart from I started taking probiotics couple of months ago.

It will just be your piles if you'd had them before, don't panic! Pop down the shop and get some dried apricots, eat a small handful every day - lots of fibre in your diet, not straining on the loo and not holding your poo in will sort you out.

(This applies to bright red blood btw - I've read if it's dark blood then it might be something more serious that you should get checked out)

Thank you @rbe78 you have calmed me down. It probably is just that, I had been on a night shift and wanted to get home but it was about 40 mins in the car holding it inBlush

I really hate being the downer...but honestly ANY blood in poo should be checked... please. Almost certainly is absoluteky nothing/piles.. but if it isn't then if it's caught early you will almost certainly be fine..

largeginforme · 24/04/2021 08:28

I've not had it since, it was just that time. Scared every time i go but if it happens again I will definitely make an appointment with Gp

I agree you need to see your go, bright red blood doesn't just occur with piles or a small cut!

However, please don't panic, there are various potential causes. Just see your gp and let them check it out - they can rule out anything serious and treat appropriately.

Hi @TaraR2020 thanks for replying. It only happened that one time on Friday and I've been since and all been okay, do you think I still need to see GP

Yes absolutely, all rectal bleeding needs to be checked by a doctor.

There are so many things it could be, so don't get stress out unnecessarily but many of the potential causes warrant treatment.

Also, on the absolute off chance it is something serious you'll kick yourself if you put off getting it sorted. It may well just be piles but it's really not worth the risk.
