Raised Liver Enzymes

Chrysanthamummy · 22/04/2021 17:00

The doctor found I had raised liver enzymes when doing routine blood tests. I had them retested a month later and they are still raised. I now need more blood tests and a scan which could be ages away. I have no symptoms otherwise and am a healthy weight and don’t drink that much. Anyone experienced this or have any idea what could cause it?

I had the same had to have a scan to check for fatty liver. They didn't find fatty liver and I never heard back from the drs. 3 years later I went and had blood test again and its still the same ggt level I think.

I don't notice any thing but the last bloods was because I have a really itchy back.

Do you know what levels are raised? That might help point to something.

Also any other symptoms, any loss of weight, pain on left or right side? The livertrust is good for advice but it's probadly just best to wait for the scan. Hopefully additional bloods will be quicker

No the doc hasn’t said which levels or how high they are. I don’t have any other discernible symptoms but I’m peri-menopausal so I’ve put certain things down to that. The initial bloods were taken as a health check before giving me HRT.

it could be from an infection
or it could be alcohol related (how much is 'not much'?)
what kind of shape are you? if you are an apple shape you might carry too much fat around your internal organs.

I had raised ALP levels if those are the ones you're talking about.

I was concerned at first as all sorts of awful things come up when you google it but it turned out in the end that it's just the way my body is, and i also found out that my sister, mum, and maternal grandmother have the same thing.

wanderedlonelyasacloud · 22/04/2021 19:58

Oops I should have added that i had no symptoms of anything either and the raised level was found during a routine blood test, so it could just be that that is how your body is.

Mine were raised very slightly but just in range in December, and more so in March when I was made aware following the second blood test (I had tests as I’ve just been referred to a haematologist for APS following having my first child in September last year). Possibility of fatty liver was mentioned. I am very overweight and while I drink, a hangover with a 7 month old is no ones idea of fun so never to excess.

I quite shit myself (so to speak). Worried for the last 6 weeks. Repeat blood test yesterday, results today came back fine. Doc suspects I may have had a virus around the time of the second test, which would account for the raised ALT (35 December, 65 in March). I didn’t ask what it was yesterday, I was just relieved.

You can get fatty liver even if you aren’t overweight. Could also be unhealthy diet, and someone I know has had her gallbladder removed following a blood test showing raised Liver enzymes - she wasn’t aware of a problem until the blood test. She’s fine now. X

Don’t google.

Chrysanthamummy · 22/04/2021 20:13

I drink less than a bottle of wine over 3 nights so I’m hoping that’s not too much. I’m slim and don’t really carry much weight. I guess there’s no glaring issues that point to liver conditions so it might be one of those quirks of our bodies. I guess (hope) the tests might at least disregard some the scary things that come up when you google! Thanks for your responses.x

I've had raised ALP all my adult life. Some just do. It can be attributable to liver, intestines or bone or nothing. Raised ALT can be about inflammation. But again, not just liver. You can ask your GP for a print out to see which test results are raised. But it doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong IME. It's something they'd check out though.

I had the same. Raised ALP levels which were back into the normal range 6 weeks later. GP said it was possibly a virus but they see to use ‘virus’ as a bit a code for ‘no fucking ideas, just one of those I find Grin
