Dilemma, Doctor or Dentist?

Katymac · 13/11/2007 08:04

I have a tooth abscess well 2 actually

& the dentist can't fix them until December (as I need 2 x1hr appointments - so I can have antibiotics until they get done

I now have ear ache

I have just finished 250 Amoxycillin (from GP for ear/throat/chest infection) followed by 500 Amoxycillin (from the dentist for abscess)

So do I go back to dentist or doctor?

I would say Dr, as you should have your ear loked at, just in case.

Katymac · 13/11/2007 08:18

Do you think

I thought ears were fairly standard

That's something to think about

Dentist AB's are cheaper too (£5 vs £6.85)

It is more than likely all connected if it is the same side, but I think that the dr will want to look in your ears to make sure there is no perforation.

The dentist, ime will just refer you to the dr, so I feel it would be a wasted journey.

Can you not get an emergency dental appointment through here and get it dealt with.....you're very brave...I couldn't cope with that....is it ok to keep taking AB's like that?

Katymac · 13/11/2007 08:22

The A-B's are waiting for me at reception for when the abscess gets too bad

I'm being lazy aren't I?

If the AB's ae at reception, then by all means get them & take them.

But if the doses you have had haven't helped you may need a different type & a dentist won't prescribe for ears.

I hate both Dr & dentist - I am a right wuss

I guess the Dr here I come

I wonder what NHS Direct (can you tell I am trying to aviod it)

be VERY careful with taking too many courses of ABs..especially different ones...I had a stubborn infected tooth a year or two ago, kept getting different ABs and ended up with a Clostridium Difficile infection....

Definitely a good reason to get this sorted out quickly by the dentist and not just keep taking antibiotics!!

mazmack · 13/11/2007 08:37

..and when you HAVE to take the antibiotics, take some probiotics too!

Katymac · 13/11/2007 08:42

Probably a good point

Oh I hate making decisions

OP posts:
mazmack · 13/11/2007 08:44

Well..if you get C Diff from taking too many antibs you will have to see the Dr a whole lot more ..pick up that phone

lulalullabye · 13/11/2007 08:48

Dr definatly as ear infection. You will need to have your ear looked at and plain and simple, dentists don't have otoscope (ear Magnifier) to look in your ear.

Here here to antibiotics, only take if really symptomatic ie swelling and temperature, take strong painkillers otherwise.

NHS direct will just tell you to go to gp.

Good luck.

OK Dr's appointment booked & as I put the phone down there was a big pop & it feels much better (typical)

Dr for ear but you really need dentist NOW for tooth absesses can't you get an emergency appt with a different dentist if yours can't do it.

Katymac · 13/11/2007 09:45

Dentist has seen abscesses (both have come to a head & popped) taken X-rays and made appointments

Not sure it's worth doing anything else as he has been battling with these teeth for some months - I couldn't go to a strange dentist

So hopefully they will work soon
