yay for us!

My snacks are nuts and cheese. And metformin has helped.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 12/11/2007 22:46

What is metformin M&J?

Spidermama · 12/11/2007 22:47

Oats, nuts. Nibbling oatcakes works well.

When the blood sugar drops, it's so sudden isn't it?

bracingair · 12/11/2007 22:47

Welcome, welcome >

my mum has metformin for insulin resistance. Have seen suggestions on the web that they are linked, but arent they opposites?

i find that when blood sugar level drops i am too confused to sort out healthy snack. Am quite controlled, so end up searching cupboards, eating nuts and then repeating...and then repeating!

I keep oatcakes in my handbag. I'm never without them. People look at me weirdly on the tube when I suddenyl delve into my bag, produce an oatckae and wolf it down ravenously :-)

bracingair · 12/11/2007 22:53

are all oatcakes low gi?

Metformin is what they prescribe for polycystic ovaries (which I have) and related insulin resistance.

Not sure how insulin resistance works but I think it's a major cause of hypoglycaemia.

Metformin helps the body process insulin properly (I think) so ensuring that you have the right levels.

Spidermama · 12/11/2007 22:55

Not sure. I have plain Nairns. They do the trick if I catch it early enough.

God it's so good to know others are, erm, well suffering as I am.

Sorry.

M+J, insulin resistance causes Hyperglycaemia and metformin is a hypoglycaemic agent which lowers blood sugar, but it's a bit of a blunt instrument so you can have hypoglycaemic episodes (as well as some nasty bowel effects ). insulin resistance is actually a high indication that you will go on to develop type 2 diabetes, hence treating it before it gets that far.

jamila169 · 12/11/2007 23:07

BTW my carb of choice is porridge or wholemeal toast - I like oatcakes, but stacking them with chees is probably not the best thing

Piffle · 12/11/2007 23:10

I'm there
am never hungry first thing and as I used to have bulimia as a teen, forcing myself to eat makes me vomit - mornings are tough for me. So I always eat one slice of cold good granary toast, with a thick layer of butter.
Then later morning I have cereal, good Dorset cereals one or porridge
tea and rich tea bikkies are only bikkies I eat.
Snacks, include nuts, raisins, dried mango, bananas.

I find it is worse when I eat a lot of fruit. The docs think I may have a fructose issue too....

margoandjerry · 12/11/2007 23:20

I thought the point was that insulin resistance meant your body did not react to normal amounts of insulin resulting in too much glucose in the blood (hyper) causing to overreacts and release more insulin but then too much so blood sugar falls too low (hypo)? But I wasn't really paying much attention at the time - would be interested to know what the real mechanism is.

I had slightly elevated glucose levels during pg (not as much as gestational diabetes) but normally have to look out for hypos.

margoandjerry · 12/11/2007 23:21

that message is gibberish! I'm sure you all got the point though...Am obviously hypo right now

jamila169 · 12/11/2007 23:50

go get an oatcake M+J!
you might need your metformin adjusting if you are getting hypo though - like I said it's a bit of a sledgehammer esp if you haven't got insulin resistance. When I wasn't breastfeeding I used agnus castus to regulate my hormones and it did help with the AF issues and skin problems from my PCOS. in fact my cycle (when not PG)is more regular than it's ever been and I don't tend to bloat up and put weight on as easily anymore

shrooms · 13/11/2007 00:42

Peanut butter on toast with a banana sorts me and dd out.
But a bowl of cereal and soymilk or a carton of soymilk is easy, as are nuts, seeds, and raisins (mixed not individually).

bracingair · 13/11/2007 21:38

can hypoglycemia come and go? i had 2.5 on a bllod test, and 3 on the the prolonged ogtt. Now checking my levels on a glucose meter and they are much better - around 5 usually. Bit confused
