So 6 weeks ago a large jar of chutney fell from the top of my fridge and landed on my toe...

..and it hurt more than childbirth.
It's no longer swollen and blue, but still throbs a bit in the evenings. When I feel it, it's sort of flaccid and wibbly - no rigidity, IYSWIM. My question is - is it worth seeing the GP about? Would they actually do anything about a broken toe, or will it just heal eventually? It's the one next to my big toe, if that's of any relevance.

PS - The chutney was homemade. Can I get an award for ponciest domestic accident ever?

What sort of chutney was it?

And on the other point yes if it is wobbly I would see GP. Always best to know if there is a # or not.

Hassled · 12/11/2007 21:37

Green tomato. Not really very nice, either.
Thank you!

Oh dear. To be injured by not very nice home made chutney is really quite high up on the list of items in my fridge I don't want to be hurt by.

Hassled · 12/11/2007 21:42

It could have been worse - there's that box of Tesco Value White Wine (again, not very nice) lurking on the top shelf.

Oh dear yes. A full one of those, dropped from the top shelf, pointy bit of box straight onto toe would be really quite awful.

I have a hefty butternut squash in my fridge atm. I think I might move it into the crisper drawer.

Hi Hassled , about 5 or 6 years ago i dropped breadboard on my big toe and it still hurts now- especially when its cold. It hurt like hell at time but throbs and get shooting pain . Never went to docs though am sure would have if had happened to one of kids. don't think they will do that much anyway

Heathcliffscathy · 12/11/2007 21:50

i tripped and caught the skirting with my toe next to little toe. DEFINITELY hurt more than childbirth....really really did.

still can't bend it properly.

wish i'd gone to gp.

I stubbed`my toe very badly on our cross-trainer a couple of months ago - which was the most action it has seen in quite a while! My toe was so painful it was waking me up at night and took ages to feel ok again. I had to see my practice nurse about something else whilst this was going on and mentioned my toe in passing and she said they would only do something if it was bent at an odd angle and suggested to help it feel more comfortable I bind the toe to it's neighbour, with Sellotape if nothing else was available. This really helped with the pain.

Hassled · 12/11/2007 21:57

Thank you all - will go for the sellotape approach for now and be a lot less gung-ho when I open the fridge!

ok which toe?

Piffle · 12/11/2007 21:59

oh just seen
it should be feeling alot better by now it is worth a visit

Sidge · 12/11/2007 22:01

The GP won't do anything. It's too far down the line to X-ray it or anything unless you have developed a deformity such as a hammer toe.

It probably was broken and hurts like hell - toes are very painful and take ages to heal. Especially as there is little you can do for them even if you deal with a possible fracture immediately. Try binding it to the neighbouring longer toe (called buddy strapping) with Micropore tape (you can buy this in the chemists) and take painkillers eg an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen as needed.

My Jar Accident is not poncy at all. Mine makes me Hard As Nails.

I dropped a jar of madhur jaffrey curry sauce while unpaacking shopping and it fell on kitchen floor. Didn't smash so I put in in the cupboard.

Few days later, I used sauce to make curry for dh and I. While eating the curry, I was trying to work out what the crispy crunchy bits were when it struck me

I WAS EATING FARKIN GLASS!!!!

GLASS!!

pointydog · 12/11/2007 22:05

I'm hard. I didn't go to doc's.

I am the veteran of 9 broken toes, 6 at once the other 4 just as and when, as you do...

I was always told that the big toe always needed an eye keeping on it and supporting but never to strap the toes next to the big or little toe together...

How is in shoes and walking etc?

Hassled · 12/11/2007 22:07

I've googled Hammer Toe and am thanking my lucky stars it's not that bad!
Thank you - I suspected it might be a wasted trip to the Drs.

Ponce award duly noted.

The bad news is ... I dropped a tin of paint on my foot (small, half full, but none the less ... ) and it still hurt a year later. It's only properly better now about 18 months on. I didn't go to the doc, and wish I had because I want to know if it was broken and perhaps they could have reset it or at the very least I could get sympathy and put a name to the pain.

policywonk · 12/11/2007 22:10

A mate of mine once decided to pull a sickie, called into work with the 'Oh I'm so unwell I think I've got the flu' act, and caught her little toe in the skirting board whilst putting the phone down and broke her toe. Spent the rest of the day in agony. That's karma, that is.

Hassled · 12/11/2007 22:11

Pointy Dog - your pnce pints are undone by your admission that you buy curry sauce. You should be harvesting your own coriander, obviously.
Agree that eating broken glass is well hard, though.

As for 6 broken toes at once - it makes my eyes water.

OP posts:
pointydog · 12/11/2007 22:11

Surely that would be good karma, wonks - she'd get more than one day off

Hassled · 12/11/2007 22:11

pnce pints = ponce points

Piffle · 12/11/2007 22:13

hassled... that was the lesser injuries...
Teh worst was a baseline skull fracture and various nasty breaks of fingers, ribs, elbows and both legs inbetween
The coma helped with the pain though...
Ahh the recovery power of youth

And will I ever let my kids ride horses...
No not ever never...

mistlethrush · 12/11/2007 22:14

Try very large squeezy tomato ketchup which overbalanced out of fridge freezer 'juice' section onto toe. Ds was so shocked at screams he insisted on kissing it better !!!!

Hassled · 12/11/2007 22:18

"The coma helped with the pain though.."

I don't know whether to laugh or sob. Am just very grateful that none of the DCs have ever expressed an interest in horse-riding. I always thought they were shifty, malevolent animals.
