Should I be worried?

My 16 year old came home from school today and said a teacher had noticed that one of his pupils was noticeably bigger than the other. I’ve got him to stand looking at a light to see if they change but the left one is still bigger. Going to phone for a drs appointment tomorrow but right now trying not to panic, shouldn’t have googled it but of course I did. Also feeling awful for not noticing this myself. Anyone know what this could be?

I'd phone 111 for some advice. Too many variables to leave it overnight. Hope he's ok

Greybeardy · 20/04/2021 21:27

It can be normal. He should see a doctor though to make sure it isn’t one of the more alarming causes. If it’s difficult to see a GP, an optician should be able to help too.

LibertyLue · 20/04/2021 21:53

Thanks for your replies, he says he feels absolutely fine, going to phone drs first thing and hopefully get seen tomorrow. If not I’ll call the opticians.

You could just go straight to the opticians as they’ve got all the equipment and can send you straight to the eye hospital if needed.

BlueCarPinkShoes · 20/04/2021 22:03

I'd contact an optician before the doctor.

omgwhy · 20/04/2021 22:05

I'd just go straight to an optician, ours are amazing and spotted an issue with my sons eye that no GP would notice.

rainbowthoughts · 20/04/2021 22:05

This isn't something I would leave overnight. Call 111 for advice.

Frlrlrubert · 20/04/2021 22:08

I wouldn't leave it overnight given some of the causes. I'd call 111 and see what they say.

dizzydizzydizzy · 20/04/2021 22:11

I wouldn't wait til morning either. I say call 111

wombatgoeswild · 20/04/2021 22:15

Yep, optician can freeze & look at the eye with the pupil dilated. It's different to an eye test, very thorough. Also free as it's part of the healthcare system. I've been referred to hospital too.

sproutsandparsnips · 20/04/2021 22:24

Do they both react to light OP? A 20% difference can be normal and if he has no drowsiness, vomiting headache or visual disturbance it is hopefully not too much to worry about. Having said that, as someone will undoubtedly point out you should seek RL medical attention and not take the word of a random on Mumsnet.

LibertyLue · 20/04/2021 22:39

Thanks again everyone for replies. Someone from 111 is calling me back.
“sproutsandparsnips” they do both contract with light but still remain different sizes. I’ve been checking back on photos we took last week and his pupils were the same size then. He’s feeling fine and has taken himself off to bed, have told him I’ll be waking him up to speak to whoever phones us back.

My eyes go like this sometimes - it's been fully checked out (neuro-ophthalmology at Moorfields) and it's fine. Apparently lots of people have slight third nerve damage, either lifelong or from an infection (chicken pox etc).

A friend had it and when someone pointed it out she ended up in the National Hospital for Neurology for a week. When her consultant reviewed her results he asked to see some childhood photos, and basically it turned out the eyes had always been slightly uneven. She has now stopped noticing again.

Basically, it is usually nothing. They have to rule out all the things you are reading about on the internet, so you are right to get it checked, but don't assume the worst.

amarya · 20/04/2021 23:14

Don't panic! Adies pupil is a possibility and not serious but do Speak to your optician and get it checked out.
