I had one years ago. It's dodgy but very treatable and he must see a doctor asap

SlightlyMadStuffing · 12/11/2007 19:17

Agreee....he must call NHS direct. Better still get to Walkin/A&E. If NHS direct think he has one he will be sent there tonight

Mawma · 12/11/2007 19:19

on phone now thanks

has he any risk factors? what are his symptoms? Nhs direct will advise him to attend a and e for a d-dimer blood test. From there if they suspect a dvt he will be refered for a scan of his leg. If the clot is unlikely to break and give him a pe he will be treated at home on medication with regular monitoring. He will probably have months of therapy when the clot has disolved to prevent another.
My friends bf was admitted to hospital with dvt symptoms and although he has had them previously this time it was something had ruptured in his leg and it was a non-serious sporting injury.
Swelling redness and pain can be caused by many things other than dvt so try not to over panic

ja9 · 12/11/2007 19:44

what are the symptoms please?

frostythesnowmum · 12/11/2007 19:46

swollen red hot hard calf pain sometimes no symptoms.

yomellamoHelly · 12/11/2007 19:57

Have had 2. As far as I understand they're completely treatable BUT it's when they're undiagnosed that they're dangerous SO GET YOUR DH TO A&E ASAP. (He'll get to jump the queue so you won;t have to hang around too too long.) The symptoms vary from person to person.

SlightlyMadStuffing · 12/11/2007 20:16

any news? what does NHS direct say?

theheadgirl · 12/11/2007 20:43

I'm a nurse in a clinic which treats people with blood clotting disorders. I agree - A and E now, or ring NHSdirect yourself, they will triage your DH through you, and hopefully either set your mind at rest or give you the back up to make him go to A and E, and stop being such a bloke about it.
Treatment is likely to be injections for a few days, then warfarin for 3-6 months depending on his personal circumstances.
Let us know how you get on, all the best.

hi all thanks for the info, dh got home late last night, thankfully they have assured us that its not dvt although he was showing symptoms of it, they think his leg has poison travelling in his leg and because he has been massaging it he could of spread it,(might explain the red hot patch) dh is a heating engineer and is always getting pieces of metal, wood splints etc that stick into him and he never notices until its infected, they had him on a drip last night and he has antibiotics but if it doesn't clear they will possibly have to drain it.

last night while dh was at hosp his father rung to say that his cousin died 2yrs ago, only 24yrs of age and it was a pulmonary something or other that killed him, he had a clot in his leg and a piece had broken off and travelled to his lung, it was all very sudden, he went to bed feeling dizzy and died during the night when they done a postmortem several infact they found it in his lung and it was tiny, that just didn't make me feel good last night as dh is 26, to say i was panicking is an understatement i was climbing the walls

oh, that was reassuring of fil!

hope dh makes a speedy recovery.

3littlefrogs · 13/11/2007 17:23

It is really importamt that that family history is passed on to the doctors treating your dh, and is recorded in his notes. They will keep an extra close eye on him.
