Does this sound like it could be teething, or could I be missing something more serious??

Basically - started 2.30am this morning, DS3 (5 1/2 months) woke up (as per normal). DH got up with him, he drank roughly the same amount of milk as usual but then wouldn't settle. Usuaally he'll either be put down in his cot awake, and go to sleep on his own, or he'll fall asleep in our arms and we'll then put him in there - either way he sleeps well (ie when he's slept through it's been using both methods of getting him to sleep).

Anyhow, after 1 1/2hrs DH woke me (as per our agreement, if he's been up for 1 1/2hrs+ and it's 4am (the time when I'm "on duty") he wakes me and I get up (he has to go to work, I don't). He'd not settled at all, kept dozing off in DH's arms (often with a lot of horrible high pitched screaming) but wouldn't sleep on his own in the cot. He gave him Calpol at about 3.30.

The same happened to me (except I didn't try with the cot as I appreciated that DH may actually have needed some sleep). Everytime I put him down he did this horrible high pitched screaming, and would only sleep in my arms, even then he wasn't sleeping for long, and sometimes was trying to sleep but was screaming and obviously not being able to.

He did eventually fall asleep (in the pushchair) at about 9.30, woke briefly at 11.40, but went back to sleep (no screaming/crying at all). I took him to get him weighed - and to talk to the HV (waste of time she was.....but that's a whole different thread) and he woke up about 1pm. Was ok for a while, but as I was getting him changed after being weighed did some more of the shrieking (even then the HV didn't think anything was wrong ). Went back to a friend's for coffee and he had some more milk (about 5oz - but the first he'd had since 5.45am!) and seemed to perk up a bit.

Stayed awake until about 3pm and then fell asleep going back home again. Since we've been back he's still been very sleepy, but when he's awake has (so far) refused any more milk - but just screamed. He's VERY sleepy (I'm about to give him his bath and put him to bed) and grumpy/shrieky when awake.

He looks a little pale (for him) but doesn't seem to have any other symptoms (poor little mite has been extensively searched several times today by me to check for rashes....). When he's crying it sounds like he's in pain - but he's not pulling his knees up at all, and he's pooing as per normal (plus nappies are still wet) so I don't think it's his tummy.

I'm veering towards it being teeth - but I can't see/feel anything and late teething runs strongly in both our families (DS1 and DS2 were 10/11 months when their first appeared, which is similar to me, DH, my DB and most of DH's siblings).....

Also, neither DS1 or DS2 really had any trouble when teething, they grizzled (a little) tooth appeared, they were fine.....so nothing like this.

Could it be teething - or could I be missing something??? Oh - and he doesn't have a temp either....

Could he have earache?

trace2 · 12/11/2007 18:52

TheQueenOfQuotes your his mum you know him better than anyone, go with your instincs maybe silent reflux, they not sick but acid comes up puts baby of feed incase it burns there mouth. if no better take him to gp

TheQueenOfQuotes · 12/11/2007 19:12

hmmm mazmack - that's a point - DS1 has intermittenly the last couple of days been complaining his ear was sore - mainly when he blew his nose hard or similar, he hasn't mentioned it today (so far)....but I thought to myself over the weekend I'd better get him to the GP if it continues.....

Not sure it's reflux of any description - for starters it's only been since this morning, and he's usually a hearty eater (which is represented by the fact he's now nearly 21lb LOL).

I know as mummy I should know my baby best - but with DS1 and DS2 I had no idea their slight grizzlyness was due to teeth that were about to erupt.....even though I looked in their mouths I could't see anything.

I'm going to see how he is tonight and perhaps make a Dr.s appointment for both DS1 and DS3.....

sorry i ment you will now if hes not right, can did you say ds3 is 5 half months, my dd is 5 months and weighs 11lb 9 oz

TheQueenOfQuotes · 12/11/2007 19:28

yes - he's 5 1/2 months - and really does weigh 20lb 9oz - had him weighed today

mazmack · 12/11/2007 19:30

Wow, that's amazing, my DD is 13 months and weighs 19lbs 1 oz...!

NorthernLurker · 12/11/2007 19:41

The sleepiness and pained crying does suggest an illness - weird no temp though. That's a good thing though of course.
Hope he settles well or at least feeds well tonight. I think for your own peace of mind a doctors visit may be in order tomorrow if he's not radically better.
Just read this back and realise it's all been said before so can summarise mt post as 'I agree' - helpful aren't I
Impresssive weight by the way!

SpacePuppy · 12/11/2007 19:49

QofQ, If you have the time to phone NHS direct do so, they talk you through a long list of symptoms to check for (they phone you back for this) and in the process eliminate any serious issues i.e. meningitis, head trauma etc. It certainly sounds the way you describe that he is in pain for some reason. Was he ever out of your care, with a childminder etc. where he could've had a fall etc. that you don't know about?

TheQueenOfQuotes · 12/11/2007 20:12

no he's been with either me or DH for the last week or so - infact he's only once been with someone else when we weren't there - and that was months ago.

I don't really go too much on the temp tbh - DS1 had horrendous chest infections every time he got a cold when he was a baby BUT he never once had a temp, and AFAIK DS2 has never had one either........infact I've come to the conclusion that if one of my children ever has a temp it's going to be something pretty damn serious.

He's settled in his cot now - grumbled a bit before he went to sleep - but nothing more than his "normal", I'm slightly concerned about his low milk intake today........but then his average milk consumption is pretty high (anything from 40-50oz in a 12(ish)hr period!) and his nappies have been wet so he's not dehydrated.......and with his size I'm not too concerned about him losing any weight - he's got plenty in "reserve".

I'll see how he goes in the night - and may give NHS Direct a ring...

QofQ - how has ds3 been today?

TheQueenOfQuotes · 13/11/2007 21:46

hmm not too bad (well no worse than yesterday - he woke up at 11pm last night and wouldn't settle in his cot again, so DH sat up holding him until 4am, and then I got up at did the remainder of the night) - started another thread in health (can't remember exact title something along the lines of "come and help a bemused 3rd mother re teething").

I'm thinking it is teething, but am going to take him to the Dr.s tomorrow to be on the safe side.

OP posts:
NorthernLurker · 13/11/2007 21:51

ok no better no worse - hope you and dh get more sleep tonight

TheQueenOfQuotes · 13/11/2007 21:53

so do I LOL.

I've been awake since 4am.......but I can't go to sleep now doesn't matter how tired I am I can't settle properly early than about midnight.......and if I do go to bed now sods law he'll sleep through until 6 (or will get up pre4am, DH will get him up, resettle him and then he'll wake up again around that time) and DH will either have to wake me up, or will vacate the bed for the spare bed in the DS's room because I'll be fidgeting LOL.

OP posts:
NorthernLurker · 13/11/2007 21:56

Ok - so the whole bed/sleep thing is complicated isn't it? I'm just hoping to keep B in her cot a bit more than last night - she was in with me from midnight

TheQueenOfQuotes · 13/11/2007 21:58

it is complicated - and DH needs his sleep because he's in the car driving for a large % of his working day.

OP posts:
NorthernLurker · 13/11/2007 22:13

We need our sleep too though don'y we - as we are 'driving' the family literally and figuratively speaking
And on that note I'm off to watch Spooks and go to bed!

Divvy · 14/11/2007 18:18
