Feeling shaky and like my heart is beating fast - anxiety?

Hi For the last week my heart seems like it's beating fast and possibly a bit irregular, not all the time but happening every day, sometimes most of the day, sometimes just the odd period here and there. I also feel shaky, not trembling but just noticing that my hands feel shaky and I just feel a bit odd. I have asthma and I just always feel like I've had too much Ventolin.
I saw a GP last week who listened to my heart and checked my chest, BP and pulse and while my Pulse was high it was only just over 100. He didn't think it was anything to worry about and put it down to anxiety but I honestly don't feel anxious although I previously have had an anxious few weeks in the last month. I've never suffered from anxiety before so nothing to compare it too. I've also started to have a bit of heartburn so not sure if that's connected - is it all anxiety related? I need to ring back by the end of this week if it hasn';t cleared up.

Hi Op, How does it respond if you sit down quietly and read or do something else relaxing? Does it settle? We know our own bodies and if you feel something is up then push for further investigation. If it’s not settling then call 111. My sister recently had a continuous fast heart rate and was advised to go to A&e and had an ECG there to check her over. She was fine but had bloods and other checks.

I think the GP needs to at least do an ecg. I had something similar after back and forth to GP they finally done an ecg, which was abnormal and I am now waiting for an appointment with cardiology. I would definitely call GP back or 111

Might you be anaemic? That can cause those symptoms.

Blackopal · 19/04/2021 20:06

Can you push for a blood test?
Do you have any other symptoms such as fatigue?
Is fast heartbeat connected to walking or going up stairs?

Thanks for the replies. I'm due to have bloods on Thursday anyway as part of a general MOT, the GP did say he would do an ECG if it continued but to give it a while to settle but obviously if it got worse to call 111 or go to A & E.
It is presenting slightly differently now in that my pulse rate is lower and nothing out of the ordinary most of today but I've still felt like it's fast. It doesn't seem to made worse by going upstairs although that can sometimes start it off and then it won't settle if that makes sense at all.
I woke up this morning with it which made me wonder if it was a reflux type thing especially as it does seem to be worse after eating. It is making me feel a bit anxious though as I don';t know what's going on, in fact I think that's my main anxiety at the moment. If I sit and watch TV or read a book it doesn't necessarily make a lot of difference really.
Think I may see if I can get to speak to a GP tomorrow.

@messyhairmessyhouse hey sorry I know this is an old thread but I just wondered if you found out what it was! Your symptoms describe exactly what has happened to me this morning, it feels like I've had loads of coffee or am on a hangover come down! But I haven't drunk any coffee or alcohol for a few weeks (have had a cup of tea this morning)! I did bake some bread last night and have been wolfing it down, so wonder if it's that xxxx

Sorry you're feeling this way it's really horrible isn't it. Not entirely sure what happened but think it was palpitations exacerbated by medication I was on. The very fast heartbeat making me feel shaky and anxious. I changed meds and they reduced although still happening ever so often. Was refereed to Cardiology who agrees with the meds exacerbating things and the palpitations were put down to perimenopause. Hope this helps

I wasn't given any meds for my palpitations. In my case it seemed to be triggered by a side effect of other meds I was on - Topirimate for migraines. I still get them every now and then but that's been classed as due to perimenopause.
