Experiences on mesalamine (Pentasa)

Recently been given this for suspected IBD.
Was going fine for the first 2 weeks, but this past week I’ve been experiencing headaches and general grogginess.

Over this weekend the headaches have been present throughout the day. I also have neck and shoulder pain and general cold-like symptoms (without the cough or sore throat). A runny, sensitive nose.

I just feel like I have no energy. And I have to go back to work tomorrow. Sad Unsure how I’ll cope like this all day.

Anyone have experience on this medication, and if you had similar symptoms?

Sounds like a virus to me op. Usual TLC I'd imagine, hope you feel better soon

I have ibd and have used Pentasa. No symptoms at all from it.

Which type are you taking - oral or suppository?

Oral is more likely to cause side effects, I had a reaction to it which included headaches and sneezing then developed a rash and swollen lips. I'm fine on the suppository though.

Equally this could just be a virus or cold so would see how you go in the next few days.

Thanks folks. I would have put it down to a virus except I’ve barely left the house recently! And no cough or sore throat.

@MegBusset
It’s oral. Yy to sneezing. Which then causes a runny nose Hmm.

The neck pain is the worst this morning. Extremely stiff. Hurts to move it in any direction. Sad

Have you been given a phone line for your IBD nurses? If so would give them a call today.

Ergh! This is why I hate taking mesalazine! The side effects were horrible and I picked up every cold and bug going.

I found the suppositories better than the tablets. The enema was too difficult for me to do.

See this for side effects you've mentioned: www.ouh.nhs.uk/patient-guide/leaflets/files/100722paedmesalazine.pdf

Definitely call your IBD nurse or GP and see if they will prescribe the suppository or foam enema.

I couldn't get on with the enema at all. Suppository is much easier imo.
