nappy rash - an idiot's guide?

8 month DD has nappy rash for the first time. She doesn't seem in discomfort, but it looks blardy awful. We've been had nappy-free spells over the weekend, and used metanium, but it's no better. And she's at nursery tomorrow, so no nappy off time. Any basic advice appreciated! Also how long does it normally take to clear?

I found metanium with a layer of sudocrem cleared it up quicker than either by themselves. It normally takes a few days to clear up fully.

My friend swore by Metanium but it did nothing for ds's nappy rash. In the end it cleared incredibly quickly by applying a fairly thick layer of Lansinoh. I suppose Vaseline would do the same trick.

I suspect it depends on the cause. Ds had horrendously corrosive teething poo at the time and so creating a barrier against that did the trick. If it's caused by something like thrush then obviously that will need a specific treatment.

thanks - which goes on first [thicko emoticon]?

multiple causes? oh cripes. I thought this was 'sposed to be one of the easier complaints to heal .
She's not teething, and the rash is on her vulva, rather than around her bottom. So I suppose it might be thrush?

We are battling awful nappy rash atm - in the form of really red spots all over my dds bottom and vulva. I think it's fungal so I'm treating with 1% canestan. It seems to be making it less sore for her but it looks absolutely horrific.

Normally metanium works for us - on the normal nappy rash (generally red sore bottom) but this is something else. Might be worth considering that it could be fungal?

Bepanthen is fab for ordinary nappy rash, but if any signs of thrush, more little red spots then would need something like canestan.
if still not cleared then may needCanestan HC 1 % from GP, which can be used with a layer of something like sudacream over it.

I found zinc cream mixed with a few drops of friar's balsam until coffee coloured (available at any chemist and cheap) really, really good.

Good luck whatever you use

cheers everyone.
it's getting worse
but at least she doesn't seem uncomfortable.

I am starting to think it might be fungal. may crack open the canesten in the morning
