Ingrown toe nail removal again

I had my big toe nail removed a few years ago and they said it would not grow back. But it has and now has to be removed again. How long would I need off work does anyone estimate. Its not a job where I can easily go back in a few days as I'm. A support worker for autistic adults so my toe would have to be fully healed first due to safety.

Time off work?

My big toenail came off (again) maybe 2 weeks ago? Like you, I was told before that it wouldn't grow back.
Not sure why you'd need time off work. Just good shoes, and a dressing while it is most tender.

Because I support adults with extreme challenging behaviour where they do lash out and if they are taking out and run I won't be able to run to get to them. Plus I'm on my.feet for 12 to 14 hour shifts

Why couldn't you run?

If you're worried about people stepping on your foot how about a pair of steel cap boots or trainers? You can get some quite nice ones.

I had my toenail removed and was in agony for days so I understand your concern. I didn't take long enough off work (1 day after the procedure) and am sure it prolonged the healing time, so I'd say a week.

MrsFin · 12/04/2021 22:57

I had mine removed and it hardly hurt at all. Nothing paracetamol couldn't handle.
I wouldn't have liked anyone to step on it though tbf.

My mum had hers done a couple of months ago and it's still really tender for her now. I'm not sure how long you'd need off work but I can appreciate why you'd need time off.

You need two days off to allow the initial clotting to happen if you have a office based job or it won't heal. In your job I'd have a week off. You just cannot expect it to heal if you straight back to that kind of job and are on your feet for such long hours.
I've had loads of patients go back to work straight after and abuse it and they haven't healed for months.

I was thinking about steal toe cap trainers to. Its because last time they took it off my foot was swollen for days. And could hardly walk. I'll talk to the manager and see what they say.

Mine was bad. Had 5 days off work I think. Wouldn't stop bleeding through the dressing.
I was scared go even bend the toe, plus I was limited to what footwear I could wear after. It was October and I could only wear sliders

Hmm, that does sound tough. Plus I mostly sit down so it's probably not comparable at all!

Do you have occupational health support or anything like that?

Mmmmdanone · 12/04/2021 23:03

Also, to stop in growing back they put on some acid to kill the nail bed, so you basically have a burn there too so not a straight forward healing process. It gets worse before it gets better. Mine also grew back but I'm never getting it done again if I can help it.

Vivana · 12/04/2021 23:04

Exactly I have to think of the adults in my care as they need someone 100% fit looking after them.

I will speak to work tomorrow and see what they say. Thanks everyone for your advice tho.

There is always a risk the nailbed won’t be completely destroyed and the nail will grow back.
