Hi all. I had an upper molar extracted this morning and it’s wasn't a straight forward one - it was already broken and snapped further so she had to drill a lot of it out. I didn’t bother to look at it when I got home but after dinner I was worried I absent-mindedly swished my water too hard through my mouth and swallowed the clot. I had a look and the hole is massive and deep. I assumed it would have a clot covering it so now I’m quite worried about dry socket and it getting painful. Can anyone tell me if this looks normal please?

@GoneCrazy

To the PP who is a dentist I don’t think she should swirl with water! What if she dislodged the clot?

DS pain is horrendous

Advice is generally not to rinse for around 24 hours following an extraction. The initial clot is important to establish healing at the base of the socket but after that it is important to rinse and keep the area clean. Glad the original poster seems to be doing well!

Gengigel gel is brilliant when rubbed on. I had a dry socket with a wisdom tooth removal years ago and it was hell on earth.

Obviously not ‘rubbed’ in a case like this but gently placed in mouth near wound. It is soothing and aids repair.

I had dry socket and didn’t think it hurt that badly. The dentist packed it, it immediately fell out when I went home and I just left it.....

A few days now since I had it out and it seems to be healing up fairly well. It now looks like I expected it to look!
