What’s happened to my finger??

Picture attached but the light isn’t great. Was putting the bins and recycling out and noticed my finger hurt. When I first looked at it it was almost as if there was a vein bulging out. Not it looks purple and is tender to touch and slightly puffier than the same finger on the other hand. No known trauma or breaks in the skin and it just seems to be between the two joints. It’s a really sudden sharp pain if I touch it.

What’s happened to my finger??

This has happened to me a few times in the past when I've pulled the yellow drawstring too tight between my fingers on a black bin bag.
It should go down in a few days.

Shouldbedoing · 12/04/2021 20:40

You've just knocked a little blood vessel and it has bled/bruised into that section of finger.
It will wear off

fairydustandpixies · 12/04/2021 20:41

I've done that loads! It's just a bruise imo, half the time you don't know you've done it at the time.

emmathedilemma · 12/04/2021 21:07

Thanks that reassuring! It’s so weird as it came from nowhere to being suddenly really sore.

Ooh yes , I don't know what its called but its briefly very bloody painful!

Hidinginstaircupboard · 12/04/2021 21:12

Oooh it does look like you knocked your finger. Unless it got a serious trauma in terms of hitting it or being hit against a hard object suddenly, the I suspect you just bruised it by bending it back too far or something that is soft tissue bruisy worthy.

If it swells up and you can't move it and it doesn't settle after a few days even on ibuprofen (inflammatory tablets which is what I'd take if I were you ) then maybe think about whether you need to chat with GP.

Hidinginstaircupboard · 12/04/2021 21:13

It's so easy to injure fingers

But to fracture or break a finger, trust me as I have had all those, you need a proper bash or hit that you'd know about

Apocalyptichorsewoman · 12/04/2021 21:34

Look up Achenbach syndrome 🙂

butterrcup · 12/04/2021 21:36

I had something similar happen to me in the past. It was so painful! No idea how it happened either. Wasn't as bruised as yours though.

I get this every couple of months - never knew it was a recognised thing!
Apocalyptichorsewoman · 12/04/2021 21:44

It happens to me sometimes too 😁

Justmuddlingalong · 12/04/2021 21:47

I get this when I catch my finger on the bastard kitchen door handle. Frequently.

That’s exactly what it looks like! I’ve been working all day (that’s my mouse hand) and all I did was took the small food waste bin to the front door, went out to the bin store (easy to open handle) and lifted the empty bucket up to bring it to the door. So no trauma at all. I get reynauds quite badly, could it be related?

Omg I get this from time to time. I can be doing something and bang! Sudden pain and a burst blood vessel.

Northernsoullover · 12/04/2021 21:53

Sorry something should have read nothing!

Joolsin · 12/04/2021 21:55

Yup, it's a burst blood vessel. Creates spectacular bruising. Hurts like hell initially, also feels really tight, then goes through the normal bruise healing colouration and timescale. More common the older you get.

Windinmyhair · 12/04/2021 21:56

Oh bugger - I didn't mean to post that. It does say that there may be an association between Raynauds and Achenbach

Joolsin · 12/04/2021 21:59

I think there may be a connection to Reynauds. And definitely can happen with the simplest of movements - I've had some pop when opening doors, for example.

Iwasonceabrownie · 12/04/2021 22:12

Me too. I actually feel like a pop in my finger, a sharp pain and within seconds I have a purple bruise. I always wondered what it was.

mineofuselessinformation · 12/04/2021 22:15

I've found putting a plaster on, firmly but not tight (as long as you do it quickly enough), helps to limit the bleeding, pain and bruising.

LoveFall · 12/04/2021 22:25

I have had this many times. I usually try to hold my hand above my heart, usually by resting my forearm on my head. It does hurt at first but I find it clears up quickly. I didn't know it had a name!

noodlezoodle · 12/04/2021 22:41

I've had this happen quite a bit, I didn't know it had a name! (And neither did my GP).

Joolsin · 12/04/2021 22:53

I've just googled, and it's most common in middle-aged women. Lucky us!!!

emmathedilemma · 13/04/2021 09:28

I know, just another one to add to the list @Joolsin ;)
