Pilonidal sinus? How would I know?

Oh god this is embarrassing but I'm sore between my buttocks, above my anus. I can't really feel much when I touch it - I assumed it was a spot or a boil. When I got a mirror to look, though, I can't see anything at all?? it's just a bit red. It hurts when I wipe my bottom, when I sit, even if I'm not careful turning in bed.
I'm terrified of pilonidal cysts, my sister had one and endured weeks of having it packed and dressed, and lots of time off work. Please tell me I'm being a paranoid hypochondriac!

It could be all sorts of things. Even just sore skin from sweat getting there.
Have you used anything to help? I know it's for piles but try and solve, I've had fissures and that helps. Or sudocrem.

Keep the area clean and dry, use no toiletries or product there. Apply the anusol or sudocrem and see how you go.

No idea where 'try and solve ' came from
Some autocorrect thing.

I had a pilonidal sinus twice and sounds exactly like that, agony to turn in bed. Mine burst, that's how I knew! I'd go to the gp if I were you!

Thank you - I've been applying sudocrem (my go-to salve for most ailments!) but could try anusol as I do have that in the bathroom cabinet. I'm hoping it is just a bit of general irritation, possibly hormones too.

Ugh. You poor thing. Thank you for replying, I'll keep an eye and if it gets any worse, I'll get myself down to the doctor's!

Probably best to see a doctor rather than faffing about with stuff at home if you don’t know what you’re actually treating. There are other things it could be (that far down it may be a perianal abscess not a pilonidal infection, if it is an infection, and no amount of sudocreme will fix that). Hope it turns out to be something straightforward.
