replacing old crowns with implants (front teeth)

has anyone done this, I have one missing tooth near the front and the dentist has said it would probably be good to replace all my old crowns which are the front six top teeth, they are 20 years old and have degrees of decay under the tooth and into the root, i have had numerous root canals etc on them, they look ok but what can't be seen is the problem.

I am just very worried about what the cost and procedure would be as it would mean having all the front 6 replaced and I know this will be costly so am seeing if anyone has has similar and can let me know their experiences?

Is it possible to have a bridge over such a big gap? I had a bridge fitted 35 years ago and it’s still going strong!

Everythingsr0sie · 11/04/2021 20:13

I had implants done four weeks ago (it’ll be a while before the teeth are fixed on) but side teeth (upper 4,5 and 6)

I was also very worried, and I hate the dentist! I can’t say it wasn’t painful and unpleasant, but I would do it again tomorrow

MayflowerMaisie · 11/04/2021 20:22

It will be costly. It would also be worth getting several quotes for the work.
DH ended up going overseas for dental work, it saved almost 50%, even taking into account the travel, and ten years on he’s still delighted.

I love my implant. It took ages to dour and there were some unpleasant moments. If I had the money I would get most of my teeth replaced by implants( I don’t have great teeth)

Nitgel · 11/04/2021 20:32

i've just looked up the numbers and mine would be from 6-11.

The dentist said a bridge wouldn't work as my other teeth aren't strong enough, i literally have so many crowns and root canals.

Everythingsrosie, did you get a denture as soon as they took the teeth out? I'm really stressed that I will have to be without any teeth in front!

I really do not want to travel out of the UK for this treatment and trust my dentist and the specialist they use, I really want to be near in case of any problems.

I could just keep the teeth until they fall out but my dentist thinks it would be best to do them all together as one has already fallen out completely. plus they would look uniform.

It will cost loads for 6 implants. I'm currently in the process of getting one implant and it costing £2k. I was given a temporary denture which is awful but serves its purpose.

Everythingsr0sie · 11/04/2021 20:45

No I didn’t but as they’re at the side I’ve got away without them being too visible, at the front I would have though.

I had the teeth out in October 2019 then lockdown hit as I should have starting getting the implants done, so basically I missed a year. Due to this I needed a bone graft/sinus lift, which complicated matters. I had a lot of pain in my sinuses and had a very bruised and swollen face after the surgery, black eye, the lot! But this was due to my sinus being moved, not the implants as such.

I woudn’t have gone abroad either, I had about four appointments with my dentist to plan the work (am having a new crowns and composite bonding on the bottom too). I grind my teeth and they are far too short.

I have needed CT scans and I feel they have put so much prep work in I don’t mind it being more expensive and think it would have been too difficult for this to happen in another country. Also, time off work and childcare would make going away very difficult (and I hate flying as much as I hate the dentist!)

I have known this needed doing for about five years as the broken teeth I had out had been cracked for a while and I do wish I had been braver and started it sooner!

Everythingsr0sie · 11/04/2021 20:50

The three I am having is over two implants, so you wouldn’t need six.
Maybe four with two bridges?

I have had an implant out in place of teeth 4 and 6 and the bridge will be three teeth, that part of the work is costing about £5,500 but the bone graft/sinus lift was over £1200 of the price

Singlenotsingle · 11/04/2021 20:51

Are you really sure you need all this drastic, expensive and unpleasant work done? Are you sure it's not your dentist just wanting to create work for himself? If none of your teeth are causing you pain, leave well alone. At

Nitgel · 11/04/2021 21:16

i know single, I know my dentist and I have had so much work done on my teeth I think it's just a matter of time before they start falling out like the one at the front did. it didn't hurt at all just came out when I was eating right at the base.

I very rarely go to the dentist. I can't remember the last time I went. I'm 69 and my teeth look ok and work well. If I went for a checkup every six months like they want you to, and have work done whenever they suggest, I'd probably have no teeth left and my bank account would be in the red.

Elouera · 13/04/2021 22:43

Why didnt you ask for a quote when they suggested all this work? Surely they gave you an estimate at the time or talked about a payment plan option? Sorry if I've missed something where you explained this?

DH was referred to a brilliant Implant clinic by his dentist. He had an infection in the upper jaw and needed 4 upper teeth replacing. They did this by repairing the hole left by the infection with a bone graft, then 2 implants in the front and a bridge with the other 2. It worked out at around £7k but he's been really pleased with the result. It took around 8 months all together as he did it in stages (the bone graft needed 6 months to bond) and DH had temporary teeth throughout.

Our dentist wouldn't touch it due to the jaw issue - and referred onto an implant specialist. I'd get some prices from others and see if you can get any recommendations.

I'd love to my front two teeth replaced with implants but I'm only in my mid 30s. I have a lot of trouble with them and they cause a lot of pain, despite root canal in one of them. I'm trying to hang on for the time being, but one day I will definitely replace them. My mum has a a couple of implants and my DH has one too and they both look good and have held up well. It will be worth the money I'm sure, although if your dentist thinks new crowns is enough then isn't this the cheaper optin?
