Approaching a GP

Hello. I have had a range of pretty serious symptoms for a number of years now. I would really, really, really like to get them checked out however previous GPs have dismissed me and been outright rude, especially when I point them towards specific diagnoses - although who wouldn't research?

I moved to another part of the country recently and would like to approach a GP as it's just getting a bit ridiculous now however my confidence is gone. What's the best way to approach a GP and actually get them to listen? For full disclosure, my symptoms point towards various things including ME and endometriosis - both illnesses I know are pretty 'female' and GPs tend to brush off and ignore for years, so I'm worried I'm in for a bit of a fight but at the same time I really am quite sick and I just want to be listened to Sad

Any advice? Thanks.

  1. Choose a female GP.
  2. Stick to accurately describing your main symptoms and their timescale
  3. Avoid proffering self diagnoses and the results of your internet searches Good luck!

Find a GP specialising in womens health. Maybe a list of your symptoms and when they started. Then a section for concerns eg me endometreosis or impacts on your life. Tell the GP you have a number of concerns which are ongoing and be prepared for the GP to lead.

Book a double appointment

Yes double appointment.
Female GP.
Stick to the facts and be concise - might be helpful to jot down bullet points.

Good luck!

If you think you have endo ask the GP to refer you to BSGE consultant these are the experts.

If you can go with a suggestion of who you might want them to refer you to I’ve found that helps.
