Blocked nose

I always have a blocked nose.
For years I used decongestant sprays every day. Recently I realised this was one of the causes so went cold turkey. I dont feel as inflamed but I still have major snot issues. Hard, bloody, lots of it, all day every day. And Im embarressed to say that Im a picker.

Does anyone have any ideas on what is causing the dried bloody mucus or how to stop it?

Do you have pets, damp, allergies?

Allergic reactions to dust, pollen, mold, animal hair, or any of hundreds of allergens can also cause your nasal membranes to become inflamed and produce excessive mucus. The same is true of nonallergenic irritants that enter your nose or sinuses

Have you tried Sterimar?

No, I dont think it is allergies.
I will give sterimar a go, thank you.

Are you on a hormonal contraceptive? There is a thing called pregnancy rhinitis (runny nose) which is caused by progesterone, which is one of the hormones used in contraceptives. I had an “ah ha!” moment when I realised the mini pill had been making me snotty for years! (It’s actually a listed side effect.)

Oh my god, I am on the progestrogen only pill! I really hope it isnt that as it really works for me. Did you come off the pill then? How long did it take to see an improvement?

You may have non allergic rhinitis and / or nasal polyps, which have symptoms similar to your description

rainbowthoughts · 06/04/2021 20:06

It should calm down. I used beconase spray to help me off my latest nasal spray dependence. It took a while but my nose does feel completely normal now, although I do get sinus pain occasionally- I just take Sudafed.

Yes i suspected non allergic rhinitis and was checked for polyps. No polyps so was just given a different spray to try, but maybe i need to go back to the gp.

What do you call a while? Weeks, months? Maybe i need to be more patient.

@Pob13 I only realised when pregnant and I am only 3 weeks postpartum... but anecdotally the last few weeks my nose has been better than it has been for years! I’m considering what contraceptives to go back on now and whether to try something new... maybe worth trying something new for you just to see?

Fully normal feeling probably took 8 weeks. Nasal sprays are the devils work. I had them dotted all over the place as I couldn't bear to be without one Sad

I hope it doesn't take too long Thanks

alzala · 17/06/2021 21:48

I’ve suffered with a blocked nose through my pregnancy and was hoping it would clear once I had the baby but it hasn’t. Anyone knows if that’s normal and does go away?

Mehripoop · 31/10/2021 21:15

@alzala mine is still there 17 months postpartum

alzala · 31/10/2021 21:19

@Mehripoop - sorry to hear :( It's awful isn't it? I ended up going for an MRI and they told me I will need surgery to cure it.

Mehripoop · 31/10/2021 21:48

I had the surgery. Did nothing. Still have the stupid ear ringing which is worse at night
