Mole removal

Hi all,

I'm just wondering if anyone has had any recent experience with mole removal? I had what I thought was a mole down near my bikini line, it's been there for years but I just noticed yesterday it has become very raised, it's still skin coloured. I'm quite concerned so I will get in touch with my GP on Tuesday to have it checked, it might be a wart or a skin tag I don't know, but it's definitely changed whatever it is. Just wondering if anyone has had any recent experience, waiting times on getting a biopsy if needed on NHS or cost of private treatment/removal? I'm 12 wks pregnant at the moment too so I'm hoping it's nothing and that treatment will be simple. Thanks in advance!

Waiting time between referral and to be seen by consultant is two weeks (if there is a concern it might be cancerous). My GP told me the threshold for referral is very low, so don't panic if you do get referred.

I then had my mole removed within another couple of weeks from my first consultant appt, but he had already told me he wasn't concerned but that I could have removed it anyway if I wanted to. The process took about 10 mins.

This was in November, so well into Covid.

That's brilliant to know, thanks so much! I know other dermatology referrals can take a long time so good to know this will be speedy if required, I didn't relish paying privately but would if I had to! I hope yours was all ok

Anything to do with suspected cancer is under the two weeks referral scheme .

Meanwhile, I was referred to ENT in March and my appt is in July.

I had a referral in Feb for a lesion on my chest that had changed shape. The dermatologist took a look and said it was worth removing and booked me in for the following week to cut it out. Pretty quick once you are in the system.

Someone in my village went to the GP about a mole,he was seen at the hospital 3days later and had it removed there and then. This was in the past fortnight.

I had similar and docs just wanted a pic and said OK to leave or I could put a cream on it they could prescribe.

DH also had similar though his was multi-coloured and was put on 2ww for hospital, it was very quick, seen within 2 weeks and they took off there, said looks bad and took layer beneath off and around and sent off for biopsy. Biopsy was very slow to come back around 6 weeks but was all clear. I think if there's an urgent issue you would hear faster though they said minimum wait was 3 weeks to him.

It was impressive how fast it was for him to be seen, I was expecting much longer delays with covid though biopsy wait was very slow.

I thought moles often changed during pregnancy due to hormones? Hopefully that will be the reason OP.

Silkiescat · 05/04/2021 02:23

That's interesting about hormones, I'm peri-menopause and getting lots of mole changes, that's probably why.

CarrieMoonbeams · 05/04/2021 02:25

I was seen by the doctor mid-September for a mole on my face that had changed shape and bled. Got it removed at the end of September. It took 9 weeks to get the results (clear 🎉) and I've got a final check up next week.

Hope yours is OK too OP Flowers.

FiFTM · 05/04/2021 08:00

Thanks for all the information, really helpful! Hopefully it is nothing, it may very well be hormonal, fingers crossed that's all it is!

GP referral to dermatology really quick, - less than two weeks. Seen by dermatologist within another couple of weeks just after Xmas 2020. Anticipated wait for removal 8 months to a year (SW).

Went private for just under1k, could have waited 6 weeks and paid £700 elsewhere but conscious that even private treatment of non-urgent cases stops under lockdown I went for expensive and immediate.

Iamblossom · 05/04/2021 08:19

My DH spotted a weird looking mole on the back of my thigh. I saw a doctor who said it needed to come off immediately. I had it cut out under local anaesthetic in a hospital the following week.

The tests came back that it was not malignant but that it was the type of growth that easily could be and on reflection they should have cut out more of the skin around it. So I have to go back this Tuesday to have more of my leg cut off. Which is a bit upsetting as the wound has now healed and I assume they will be cutting it open again.

But better safe than sorry I suppose and they are being very thorough.

I hope yours is OK.

Wow it is pricey for private removal but I think I'd feel the same, lockdown is doing a lot of damage when it comes to non Covid healthcare unfortunately. Thanks for the info, hope you're ok!

Had one on my shoulder checked a couple of years ago - it seems that I had a skin tag inside the mole and my sports bra was aggravating it. No option given for removal.
