What are the symptoms for Underactive thyroid?

I am constantly tired, losing hair in clumps - have bald patches, dry hair, dry skin, really heavy periods.
I thought some of these symptoms were post-natal or even peri-menopausal, but I think it might be thyroid problems.

Suzywong, I know that you had/have treatment for this - if you are around later & see my thread I wouldn't mind a bit of advice.

Think I need a trip to the doc, but don't want to be fobbed off with post-natal platitudes.

Hi Gingerbear,

It may be worth a trip to docs.Thyroid problems can be ascertained by a simple blood test.(Thyroid function test)

Treatment is usually simple i.e taking thyroxine, and having regular bloods done to check levels.hth xx

I have an underactive thyroid, my symptoms are - tiredness, heavy periods, sensitivity to cold, dry eyes.

I don't know about losing hair, but it's possible.

It's very simple to diagnose, just ask Dr for a blood test. If you do have an underactive throid they will give you thyroxine which you have to take for the rest of your life. It's is purely topping up a missing hormone, so not medication as such.

Normally they start you on a low dose and after a few weeks take another blood test to see if it's the right dose, this process can go on for a while until you get it right. I have regular blood tests and even now sometimes have to change the dose.

Hope that helps
