Vegetarianism and low residue diets

TaraR2020 · 01/04/2021 12:46

Anyone here manage to reconcile the two?

I would like to adopt a vegetarian diet but cannot see how to make it work with a low residue (low fibre) diet and wondered if anyone has.

Very briefly, low residue diets limit the types of plants one can eat and rule out wholegrains, nuts, seeds, fruit/veg skins, pulses, etc.

What is the reason for a low residue diet and is it something you are looking to implement long term ?

TaraR2020 · 02/04/2021 00:38

Its for medical issues and yes long term, I've already been on it a few years

It's not going to be impossible but I think you may need dietitian advice.

Vegan would be a nightmare. The only person I found who absolutely couldn't do it at all was lactose intolerant as so many low residue foods are dairy.

You can have tofu, quorn, smooth peanut butter, eggs and cheese (OK eggs aren't vegetarian) but protein wise it is v limiting.

Thank you, I've not tried tofu but I'll have a look at it. Strictly speaking, butters are off the menu too :/

You're right about veganism- my dairy consumption has increased since I went low res. I miss all the veg I used to eat tho.

The diet sheet I give out tends to be cancer focussed (because that's what I do) and it does have small portion of smooth peanut butter on but no other nuts of any sort.

Having looked at loads, none of them agree which is v frustrating so I suspect there is trial and error for what works for you.

Isn't that truth? Grin

I have chapter and verse of diet sheets, I saw a dietitian early on but I didnt feel such a strong pull towards giving up meat then.

I think I'll just have to experiment a bit more, I only eat meat once or twice a week as it is really, same with fish so it could be worse I suppose. I've upped red meat consumption lately because I'm anaemic but once treated Im hoping to reduce it again. I just wondered if anyone else had managed to achieve what feels like the impossible.

Thank you for your suggestions though - I'll definitely try tofu. Smile
