Hoping someone can help me. My ds who is 2 has had some blood tests done. We got the results back today. All were fine except the renal one which was outside normal range but not to worry about.

At my dr surgury the receptionist reads the results off the computer so when I asked what outside the normal range was she didn't know but said that the dr had made a note that it wasn't to be worried about.

I know that there will always be people who fall outside the normal range, but haveing been very ill when I was younger which went un/mis-diagnosed for months I am overly concerned with my son's health.

Does anyone know what a standard renal blood test checks for, and if I should be concerned about his result being outside the normal range?

i am a bit rusty on bloods, but they probably would have checked the urea levels, and nitrogen, also creatinine. What they are looking for is how the kidney is functioning. TBH, if they are just outside the normal range then they will probably be no problem, you have to remember that what is normal for one person might be high for another, that is why it is based on a range. They are measuring amounts of certain proteins and chemicals in the blood which are filtered by the kidneys. You might expect the kidney bloods to be elevated if a person was slightly dehydrated at the time of the test, any little thing like that can push things over "the normal range". If the results were much higher than "normal" or more than one enzyme was raised then they might have wanted to retest. What was the blood test taken for? Sorry, im being a bit vague as im only basing this answer on my biochemistry degree and experience as a vet nurse, both of which are rusty, i hope someone with a bit more experience comes along soon.

I certainly wouldn't be worried if i were you, if you are, then request a telephone consultation with your doctor for reassurance. I cant imagine why the receptionist felt the need to tell you the kidney bloods were slightly raised if the doctor wasnt concerned. Not really her place and it has caused you unnecessary worry!!

I remember my doctor phoning me once to tell me about some bloods i had, basically my liver enzymes were about as high as they could go (this was expected as i had gall stones at the time) but we were checking to make sure the pancreatic enzymes were ok - the hospital had told me i was fine to be discharged based on my results. There was no need for further information.

He'd had diahhorea (sp) for 3 weeks so he probably was a bit dehydrated. They were doing basic tests on his blood because stool samples had shown no bacterial or viral infections so we didn't know what was causing it. He is back to normal now though. I just know his dad will be asking me questions about it though and obviously I don't have the answers because I don't really know what they were checking.

I know there are always people who are outside normal ranges for things so I will not worry about it. My brother and I always shock dr's when we have blood tests done at how high our iron levels are, but there is no reason for them being abnormally high.

Thank you so much for your answer. I feel a lot calmer now. If it bothers me again or his dad wants further answers I will ask for a telephone consultation.
