I have been feeling odd for a few days. I have been off for a couple of weeks. I think sinisitis. Im prone to this.
However, last few days i have been feeling very odd. Almost like drunk.
I have taken my blood sugar levels today and it has been low 3.0 and also as high 8.9

Im not sure if this is of concern through?

I dont want to make a mountain out of a mole hill.
I just sont know why i feel so off.

Anyone experienced this?

Good you're seeing your GP. Should definitely get this checked.

There are some short term causes of blood glucose fluctuations but GP will obviously want to check for diabetes.

You have a blood glucose meter already? Is there a particular reason you have one?

Covidworries · 03/04/2021 17:25

I just been feeling so strange that i wondered if blood sugar was low, so thought id check this. Its so hard to see a GP since covid. I was trying to pinpoint what could be making me feel so odd.

It depends on when those readings were taken. On the face of it 3 is not very low and 8.9 is not especially high so those numbers wouldn't be concerning on there own. Certainly most healthy non diabetics would be within those ranges. 9.9 is rather high for a fasting glucose and might be indicative of type 2 diabetes but equally it might not.

It might be worth trying to capture how quickly you drop/rise as this can make you feel a bit rough even if the numbers are normal

BIWI · 03/04/2021 18:43

What have you been eating/drinking? And when have you been eating?

joystir59 · 03/04/2021 18:49

Anything over 8 is diabetes. That's what's wrong with you.

This is not true. Most people would go above 8 after eating, especially a high carb content meal. You can't diagnose diabetes from a one off sugar reading, and even if its a regular occurance there are other causes of high sugar readings that aren't diabetes.
Covidworries · 03/04/2021 19:02

Eating mainly just breakfast (toast), lunch (today was beans, chips and cheese, yesterday was roast dinner) tea (today tuna, sweetcorn and cucumber sandwich, yesterday cheese on toast).
Drinks water and also 2 glasses of squash.

Since day of first post the lowest it has gone is 7.5 and this is 4.5 hrs after food
Mostly it stays in the 8.5 to 10 range with some readings if taken an hour after food in the 12 to 13 range.

Do you think this needs to be assessed sooner than end of the week or just to wait till appointment?

@Covidworries - Do you think this needs to be assessed sooner than end of the week or just to wait till appointment?

Obviously you need to be checked to see whether you have diabetes or whether some sort of short term problem is responsible for this.

To be on the safe side - until you have an appointment - the safest thing to do might be to work under the assumption that you do have diabetes and follow the guidelines on when to seek emergency care if you feel really unwell. E.g. some guidance here...

www.sja.org.uk/get-advice/first-aid-advice/diabetic-emergencies/diabetic-emergency/

You might not end up being diagnosed with diabetes - but following these emergency guidelines might be the safest thing to do right now.

Maybe some other MN folk who have diabetes themselves will be along to comment and give advice. And tell you about how with treatment it can be managed really well. Look at Teresa May (PM) and Steve Redgrave (five Olympic golds!)

bobbiester · 03/04/2021 19:26

Sorry if all that sounds over-cautious - but it's just that you mentioned...

"However, last few days i have been feeling very odd. Almost like drunk."

JustOneMoreStep · 03/04/2021 19:26

I would guess at pre diabetic or type 2, especially with the update of nothing below 7.5. Personally I'd think the end of the week would be ok, they aren't horrendous readings but by all means speak to a gp on Tuesday if you are worried. I imagine in the first instance it will be a simple blood test for hba1c and fasting glucose (hba1c is your average sugar level for the last 3 months) and then a daily tablet if diabetes/pre diabetes is found alongside dietary advice.

Your meals sound quite carb heavy (typical British diet) and the body converts carbs to sugar. Perhaps in the short term have a look at some keto/low carb meal ideas not for the perceived dieting benefits but just to see if it helps you feel any better in the short term.

Covidworries · 03/04/2021 20:03

Thank you all. It has helped so much. Will monitor until blood tests next week. Will try adapting diet too. Many thanks

Your diet is massively carb heavy. This doesn't mean you're diabetic, but it won't be helping your blood sugar levels - they're probably swinging massively up and down.

Could you try and cut down some of the carbs? So, instead of having toast for breakfast have something like eggs, or yoghurt? And add more fresh veg/salad to your meals instead of having a sandwich or something on toast.
