Very low Vitamin D

I’m currently being investigated for inflammatory arthritis, had a bunch of bloods done, one of the things that came back was very low (18M something) and I have to go on a 6 week high dose regimen to bring it closer to normal.

Admittedly a combination of the arthritis pain and lockdown I’ve not been outside a great deal, but eat oily fish, red meat etc. How did it get so low? My GP said it would be making the bone pain worse, but the arthritis is still ongoing.

Any tips on arthritis, coping with the pain or Vitamin D input very welcome!

I had low vitamin D (not as low though) they tested me again after a while and it was normal after supplements. It's good to pick up as can make you feel tired and low. Also pain. Having dark or olive skin can make it more likely to have low levels, as well as lack of sunlight.

Most people in the UK are deficient. Not enough sunlight of the right wavelength through the year

Also the blood tests aren't especially accurate as Vitamin D is stored in the liver, so the circulating Vit D doesn't give a true picture of what is going on on the body.
My DS has Coeliac disease and they generally don't think the Vit D blood test is useful.

Mine was shocking and I just put the pain down to other stuff. Anyway after having the high dose vitamin D the shooting pains in my legs stopped

Mine has also been through the floor in recent months and since I started high dose supplements I'm noticing an improvement in various things. Supplement away, my friend!

Thanks all. Wasn’t even on my radar, and wondering what would have happened had I not needed the investigation re arthritis.
