A Brita water Filter basically cured my chronic IBS

Obviously everybody is totally different and what worked for me won't necessarily work for you... but this has had SUCH an impact on my life I had to share:

Getting a Brita filter and only drinking filtered water has all but fixed my digestive issues after years of pain/bloating. (Still the odd food item that sets it off but I'm 90% better than I was!)

I've had really bad IBS-D for several years, think first sip of tea in the morning had me running to the loo, can't plan any kind of social meet-up without knowing exactly how far it is to a bathroom... Lived in London for 10 years and it's got steadily worse.

I think maybe the chlorine in the London water was upsetting the balance of bacteria in my gut...

Worth a try if you are in a similar position!

Have you checked to make sure your water supply isn't contaminated?

SecretThermalsAreTheBest · 30/03/2021 18:31

Hmm no but I live in a London street in a busy suburban place - and my partner has no stomach issues!

And I've also moved 3 times in the last 10 years, including once 2 years ago. Definitely not a contaminated water supply.

Thank you I'll try that.

Are you still drinking tea etc or do you mean you only drink plain water?

megletthesecond · 30/03/2021 22:10

It doesn't surprise me. Years ago one of the NHS dieticians told me to try bottled water as our area had a slightly higher level of cryptospiridium and some people are very sensitive to it.

TheSpottedZebra · 30/03/2021 23:12

Did it work, meglet?

megletthesecond · 31/03/2021 08:21

Yes, it did help a bit. Although cutting out gluten was a bigger help.

SecretThermalsAreTheBest · 31/03/2021 10:53

I use the filtered water for everything - fill the kettle for etc from the Brita filter (but I made sure to clean it out properly and de-limescale it first...)

That's interesting @megletthesecond - and gluten makes sense - I've found that there are still a few definite triggers, but they are now quite specific and more easily avoided.

Before, I guess because my digestive system was generally pretty unhappy, anything and everything (onions, garlic, basically every meal I ate) was causing me pain, but now I'm using the filtered water it's only very specific things for me that I need to avoid (like miso and malt). And things like onions that were awful before now have no effect at all.

I have read this too.

My son has IBD and Im making small tweaks at home to help where I can and one if these happened to be in the sale - it's making me want to drink more water and the family as it's nice and cold!!!!
