Tongue tie in adults

Has anyone been diagnosed with a tongue tie as an adult? I'm pretty sure I have one but my GP and dentist don't know anything about it and seem to think it's only a problem in babies.

Not officially diagnosed but I'm pretty sure DH has one. His tongue is super short and he struggles to pronounce 'th' easily - he has to really make an effort to bring his tongue forward. Not actually affected anything other than this though.

I think I have this. Like you found, neither my doctor or dentist seemed to know anything about it. I read online it can cause problems with slurred speech especially when tipsy and neck/ back ache. In the US I think adults can get it snipped but think you’d struggle here in the UK.

Why do you hink you have tongue tie?

If you are having problems, altered speech or eating difficulties then its still a fairly simple procedure to carry out and is done on the NHS. But realistically if you've made it to adulthood then its unlikely any sort of tongue tie is causing any major problem, babies frenums are snipped if they are having difficulty feeding or to prevent difficulty. Obviously as an adult you aren't reliant on a suckling motion.

DIshedUp I have lots of signs of tongue tie but the worst is my forward head posture. I've had neck and shoulder pain for decades and I just can't seem to keep my head straight. My Pilates instructor straightens it and my head tilt but then I feel all wrong and uneven because of so many years of compensating. I also have a lot of tightness in my posterior chain. After six months of stretching exercises I can just touch my toes but if I even skip a couple of days I tighten right up again. And this is after eight years of Pilates before that. I really feel I should be a lot more flexible but I can't achieve it. Apparently a tongue tie can affect the whole posterior chain.

There is a facebook group called Tongue Tied Adults Support Group and if you search for 'UK' you will find some advice, you can get help in the UK but not very much. I have looked into it before but haven't done anything about it, I am going to see an osteopath soon and I am hoping they can tell me if it would be worth getting it sorted. I have the same posture issue.

Thanks Birthdayhat I've had a look at that group but they seem to be mainly US and Australia.

It is but if you search in the group for 'UK' you will see that there are people in the UK that have recommended providers.
