PLEASE HELP - BABY WHEEZING FOR 3 DAYS

11mth old DS woke up wheezing on Wednesday morning. He has been admitted to hospital with bronchialitis before so we rushed him down to A & E. They gave him a nebuliser there and after monitoring him for a few hours they said we could go and told us to keep using an inhaler that we have for him. He started wheezing again early afternoon so I took him to GP who gave him another neb. Brought him home for his dinner and he was still wheezing. Took him back to A & E who tried different inhaler and gave him steroids for his lungs.

They said that his chest doesn't sound like he has bronchialitis but his airways have reacted to a cold virus that he has like an asthmatics would so I am guessing the poor little bugger has asthma.

He has had his last lot of steroids this morning and has to have 6 puffs of a salbutamol inhaler every 6 hours but he is STILL wheezing like an old man who has smoked 60 Bensons a day for most of his life. He is toddling about and eating though so this is why no one is too concerned.

Have I a right to be concerned or do I just let him get on with the wheezing until the virus does us all a massive favour and pisses off?

To make things worse, he hates the inhaler mask and I have to pin him down to get him to have it.

Thanks for reading.

I really sympathise with you. I have a 2.6 year old who had bronchollitis as a baby and was hospitalised and ventilated.

So we go though what you are on a regular basis (minus the nebs, as he can not tolerate them). We use up to 10 puffs every 2 hours at times.

If you think that he is wheezing badley or take a look at his chest and is in going in by his ribs when he breeths I would take him back. I would trust your instint - if you think it is just a wheeze and that he is OK otherwise and there is no blue round his lips or anything like that then carry on.

It may be worth ringing the docs to see if you can increase the meds.

I hope he improves soon

how is your little one now?

I agree with Madhouse re looking at ribs. Also, if LO does not like the mask then one tip is to squirt the inhaler into the mask before you put it to the face and then hold it there - it sounds awful but if they are crying then they are taking deep breaths which is actually a good thing iyswim.

My 4yr old was v similar and has got better over the years if that is any consolation. You also do get to recognise the signs! They don't tend to worry if they are still alert and eating but if your child is like mine then he would eat whatever the situation so I had to make a bit more of a fuss. General rule of thumb is if worried then call the out of hours people. Keep us posted

my dd has a wheeze every time she gets a virus, but it's not asthma - your ds might have that.
