What do you think it could be? Dd has been really lethargic today and was tearful all day yesterday. She is quite hot and her cheeks are blotchy red looking? I have given her calpol and the temp has come down. I am just worried about the blotchy cheeks.

Aw, poor thing. I would guess the blotchy cheeks are just part of the high temp or the virus that she obviously has. If I were you I would concentrate on keeping her comfortable, give her lots of fluids, and keep an eye on the cheeks and the rest of her body for a rash.

Sounds like a virus but could also be adult teeth coming through. More likely to be a virus though. I echo KATG's advice.

Teeth coming through at 5?

blossomhill · 31/10/2004 13:51

She had a bit of a temperature last weekend and it went away quickly. Maybe it is teeth or a virus I will watch her and see what happens. Thank you

Blossomhill, just had a thought. Do her cheeks look like she has been slapped across them? There is a little known virus called "Slapped cheek syndrome" (for obvious reasons). Also known as Fifth disease or Parvovirus. It is a viral illness, the obvious feature being the red cheeks. 2 of my children had it a few years back. It is nothing to worry about - very mild, like chickenpox but even milder as far as I can recall. School might prefer you keep her away from the other children although my doctor said there was no real need as it was not a nasty illness and the child is more infectious before the rash on the cheeks appears anyway. Your dd could well have it the more I think about it. Sorry, I was a bit dozy and didn't think of it yesterday.
KATG - yes of course teeth coming through at 5! My 2 who are older than 5 both got adult molars at 5 and ds2 started losing his milk teeth at 5 so there were obviously adult teeth moving around for that to ahppen.

Lonelymum could be right about the Slapped Cheek - very common when they start nursery or school. Once the redness goes the rash is more blotchy, lacy over the body and face. Associated with a high temperature and cold like symptoms so the rash is often the only way to distinguish it.

Otherwise if her throat is very sore it could be Strep Throat or Scarlet fever - but the latter has a more solid red rash.

Hope she feels better soon
