Hiatus hernia in early 20s??

A recent x ray showed a hiatus hernia, which would explain some of the symptoms I'd been experiencing, but I thought they were covid related! Since having covid I've had chest pain, acid reflux, heartburn, fatigue, cough, feeling like I need to clear my throat and sometimes my throat is hoarse, but now doctors are saying the hernia could be the cause. I've been put on some medication to help. Is there anyone else with similar symptoms who has any tips on how to manage it?

Start taking vitamin D supplements because of the risk of osteoporosis from the acid reflux medication.

I find high sugar high fat foods set my acid reflux off the worst. I've had symptoms since my 20's but only years later would my (new) gp investigate. Other members of my family have had them, dr is investigating a genetic component (and thinks it is interesting Hmm)

From PPIs? Can you elaborate? I’ve been on these most of my adult life and haven’t heard this.

@Absolutelyscunnered that was to

@HopeClearwater there is some uncertainty surrounding the increase in osteoporosis risk but here is an extract from the NICE website

“For all PROTON PUMP INHIBITORS

Can increase the risk of fractures (particularly when used at high doses for over a year in the elderly) (in adults); may increase the risk of gastro-intestinal infections (including Clostridioides difficile infection); may mask the symptoms of gastric cancer (in adults); patients at risk of osteoporosis

Cautions, further information

Risk of osteoporosis

Patients at risk of osteoporosis should maintain an adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D, and if necessary, receive other preventative therapy.”

I have heard of people developing gastric issues, including hiatus hernia, after COVID. I don't think anyone has made a definite link yet but it may end up being identified as another long-term effect.

I have just started taking PPIs daily and while they have controlled my symptoms, I am wary of being on them long term. I think the key thing is to recognise if they stop working or stop being as effective - as this could be an indication of something more serious.
