CHRONIC PAIN - Mobility aids I’ve not loved & lost (lighthearted!)

Thinking about absolutely rubbish mobility aids, gadgets and other medical equipment that I bought on promise could help and ended up being binned or the charity shop.
Share you insight!

Me :
Tried 2 sorts of bum wipers the sort that are a plastic stick that “hold” the paper and reach around to wipe your bum. Expect the paper would fall off as soon as it touched you skin so despite various techniques was bugger all use. Had to go in the bin because no one wants to buy a second hand one Grin

Pick up/grabber stick that was advertised as being able to pick up a tin can. Except you need the strength of three men to squeeze and hold it to pick anything heavier than a pair of socks up.

Over the bed table that was impossible to level each side and if you breathed as much on it would pour tea over your lap.

There are plenty more need to consult Amazon’s & ebays past history!

I go to Amazon and search “disability” and “aid” every time I need to list all my gadgets for something like PIP Grin

I’ve said this to you on the other thread @Akire but perching stools seem completely pointless to me and I’m wondering who invented them. I’m fairly tall but they are too high to actually “perch” on and cause extra pain. Also they’re not wheeled, so if you use them for cooking (as was suggested to me) you have to keep getting up and nudging them round the kitchen, or get someone else to move them. Pointlessness. Mine ended up in a corner filling up with paperwork. It’s now in the garage.

Also I wish they wouldn’t make all the tables and cabinets and suchlike in hideous 1970s fake teak. I did fablon my crutches and I know there is company that makes crystal encrusted ones, so I’ve now started covering and decorating everything else disability related in the house. One at a time. Grin

In my order history, I mean. (Sorry getting foggy, now.) It really is sobering to see how much useless crap I’ve tried alongside the good stuff.

Which reminds me, my friend (who has similar back trouble) hit on the idea of using a beautician-style wheeled saddle stool. So I’m going to try hers when I’m released from shielding! I don’t know if anyone else has tried that?

God yes the 1970s style things. Why are commodes so bloody ugly? The over bed tables that just remind you every minute that you are unable to function'normally'? The frames around the loo, the stair lift that beeps forlornly every few hours ( and endlessly if there's a power cut ) thank god that's not in this house! And why oh why can't the wrist supports etc be in nice colours?

Sooverthemill · 24/03/2021 17:37

I would love some stuff for DDs room that made her feel like a young woman and not an old lady

Akire · 24/03/2021 17:43

I once bought a car seat turner that was supposed to “spin” to make getting out easier. It turned out to be some really rough carpet and chip board that you sat on. If you couldn’t get out of car without support you don’t want to try get it under your bum before you get out.

It only moved if there was no weight on it so was bloody useless! Can’t remember what happened to it in the end..

There are some good mobility aids companies based in the UK. This one have a warehouse in the same place as the customer service team so you can find out what is in stock and how good they are.
