Could this be the start of osteoporosis?

The top joint of the middle finger of my right hand (dominant hand) has started becoming really sore when using it ie pressing the trigger of a spray bottle for cleaning, doing up my shoes laces. Anything that puts a pressure on it.
Last night I noticed it was a bit swollen and this morning it is more so. It made a sort of click noise when I bent it. It does hurt a bit to bend, and is still swollen. If I straighten it there is a white line where the joint is and the normal creases are not really there.
I've taken a photo of my right and left hand, which hopefully you can see what I am on about (1st photo is my right hand, 2nd is my left).

more likely some inflammation.

if it persists go and see your gp.

It does hurt to bend but it doesn't feel warm like I'd expect it to if it was a infection. It's only been a week, gradually getting worse over that time. I'll see how it is in a few more weeks and phone them then. In the meantime, I'll try some ibuprofen and see if that helps.

Osteoporosis usually manifests as spinal problems, such as a stooped back in older age. Definitely not swelling on a finger. It probably is inflammation of some sort, and might clear up, provided you don’t put stress on it.

80sMum · 23/03/2021 15:01

It could be the beginnings of osteoarthritis but it's not osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is often called the "silent disease" because it has no symptoms. For many people, their osteoporosis only becomes evident when they have a fracture. The most common sites for osteoporotic fractures are the wrist, spine and hip.

How old are you, OP? Do you have any of the risk factors for osteoporosis, such as:
Female
Low BMI
Post menopause
Parent/s have/had osteoporosis
Parent/s have/had fractured a hip

80sMum · 23/03/2021 15:04

Sorry, posted too soon. Other risk factors:
Celiac disease
Gastric diseases
Taking prednisone/prednisolone
Tsking PPIs such as Omeprazole

I think you meant osteoarthritis. It sounds and looks the way you've described it as possible early osteoarthritis. The clicking sound is known as crepitus. I've had it myself for a couple of years.

longtompot · 23/03/2021 21:42

God, yes, that is what I meant! Arthritis.

@80sMum the only thing on your list is I'm female. I think I was a bit worried as I am on several meds which are reducing oestrogen and I know that can reduce bone density, just not sure how quickly that could happen. One of the drugs I have been on for 6 months and the other for about a year.
My yd has JIA/RA bot noone else in my family has anything like this as far as I know. Esp not my parents.
