In agony with “ toothache” but can’t localise which tooth. The dentist has xrayed my mouth and says there’s a shadow on jaw. Now referring me to hospital......Says it could be a cyst. But now worried sick. Anyone had similar who could reassure me?

I’m sorry I can’t help with a diagnosis but I hope you’ll be seen quickly and get good results x x

Again haven't had similar, but a quick google tells me that a cyst is non cancerous, and often only discovered when someone is in pain and the dentist does an xray.

Good luck with it all!

My daughter had a shadow which turned out to be a mandibular cyst, came as a real surprise/shock. It was discovered when she had x-rays prior to having a brace, she was 11 at the time. She had an op and they removed the cyst under anaesthetic, bit bruised for a couple of days and absolutely no issues since.

Oh goodness thank you, quite reassuring.

I know it is very stressful but so good that your dentist has found it. Good luck at your hospital appointment Flowers

I had these as a teen, it was a cyst. Had it removed, it was tricky as next to a nerve but all fine.

Thank you cryh.

try not to worry

My DH had this and it was just a cyst that had to be removed. Weirdly it grows back every few years and has to be removed again. Dentist is always very chipper about it and although it's a bit painful after removal like any tooth extraction would be , it's really no bother.

Diamondella · 22/03/2021 21:22

I’m not clinical but I do work with clinicians and I know that I have heard them say that often it’s more reassuring if you have pain rather than not have any pain so for example it would be more reassuring if you had pain with the shadow rather than a shadow and no pain. Obviously this is not the case in every situation, but may offer you a little bit of reassurance x

fluffysocks89 · 22/03/2021 21:24

Thank you all for taking the time to reassure me. Unfortunately I’ve been googling and scaring myself silly.

My husband had an x-ray which showed a shadow in his jaw and again in turned out to be a cyst. Try not to worry!
